Samco Intake Hose Fitment

How is the fitment with the Samco Intake Hose? I am about to install one and it looks like it will make the filter hit the intercooler spray canister. Have anyone tried this intake on an Evo 8 with the stock intercooler canister in place? This only applies to 03-04 Evo's. I think the filter is a vibrant filter.

The great thing about the Samco is that you can trim it to fit most filters. I know my friend trimmed about 1" off for it to fit his IX with an Amsoil filter.

While you're at it, rethink your choice of filter: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...t-results.html

I bought everything as a combo. I will try to run it without a filter first to see if this intake makes any power. If it does make power I may try a Perrin or Amsoil filter on it.

Incidentally, which end of the SAMCO intake hose should be trimmed? Can one trim the end that connects to the compressor inlet or only the end that connects to the outlet side of the MAF sensor? Or both, or either?

Trim the MAF side of the pipe.

I was checking some images and the stock hose and the Samco appears to be about same length. So how about using a filter on the stock hose. Same trimming issues? The advantage of a slightly longer hose is that the filter will be farterh from the heat and radiator fan air.

That means that the Perrin is slightly shorter than the stock one? I'll check if the stock airbox fit with the Samco.

The Perrin pipe is the same length as stock, and I believe the Samco is too. The Perrin can be used with the stock airbox and I think the Samco can too.

Something does not add up here. If the Samco and Perrin are the same length as stock, why a open filter hits the ACD reservoir or Intercooler canister? Maybe the Perrin filter is an inch or two shorter than the paper/fabric filters.

The issues I've seen are regarding the Amsoil filter since it is longer than most others.

Just to make a quick test I install the Intake Hose with the MAF adapter but no filter. Did two 3rd gear pulls and compare logs to the one with the hacked box and stock intake hose. Using VDR I got basically identical results for the two setups. On the second run I got massive knock (about 20~30 counts from 6K up)

Airflow did increase from 40.5 lb/min to 43.3 lb/min so the there is a restriction on the stock intake but for some reason power was the same. I did no change in the tune just change the intake hose and removed the filter. Does these results makes sense. AFR were about the same for the run at about 11.3 AFR on 93.

The hose doesn't HAVE to be trimmed but almost all open air filters will fit better with it trimmed. I know on mine if it wasn't trimmed the filter jiggles around resting on the airbox mount and when the car is driven aggressively shock to the MAF causes the car to stumble.

Now I'm sure there are ways to prevent that from happening but trimming the Samco hose is the least "half arsed" way of doing it.

^ 100% true. I made the same choice. Trimming it also allows you to hack the stock airbox and use a conical filter inside the factory box.

Here is the link to my FS thread. I am flexible on price if anyone wants to bargain.

Please don't say that you are going to run around w/o a filter! Your motor may end up ingesting some God awful debris.
