+1 for bottom removal. Ive done it about 15 times and always dropped them through the bottom. Its a very simple removal.
1. Jack the car up as high as you can in the front. Remove the front bumper.
2. Pull the wheels off/remove ball joints and tie rods.
3. Remove all wiring/hoses/vacuum lines that would keep the engine connected to the car.
4. Disconnect the driveshaft and downpipe. (if you want remove the turbo)
5. Use the hoist to put tention on the engine. Loosen Driver/Passenger/Firewall Mounts.
6. Use the jack and put pressure on the cradle. Remove the power steering lines and other lines that are connected to the cradle.
7. From the inside of the car, disconnect the steering nuckel
8. Lower the cradle. (be sure to watch and make sure nothing is getting pinched or pulled on. Move the cradle out of the way.
9. Finally start lowering the engine to the ground. If you have a strong creeper and a couple of 2x4 you can set the engine on the creeper and roll it out from underneath the car.
This is obviously just a quick write-up. There may be other necessary steps. Feel free to add to this. James

I pulled mine out from the top... was pretty easy. Have never tried dropping it am too lazy to remove the subframe thing. It only took 30 mins to remove the motor after i had already dropped the tranny and what not. I am going to try to put the motor in with the tranny attached this time and see if it is easier. As soon as I get my clutch ill be doing it and can take some pictures. The motor is ready to dropped in I just want to have tranny on it already. I remember it was a pain getting it lined up from under the car just trying to hold it up with my big muscles!

Well, when I rebuilt my engine it was my first time doing so. First time pulling the engine out of a car as well. I pulled the engine out from the top, but I did this without the lower subframe assembly installed. I installed the engine and tranny from the top and it was pretty easy to maneuver with two people. Good luck.
