failsafes are not catch alls. It still relies on one of two things for the failsafe (and not generally both of them)

Some failsafes use pump flow (aquamist) which is a pretty good start. It does allow for everything but head pressure and proper atomisation if the pressure was low but the flow was adequate.

Others are just straight pump pressure but if they dont have the flow at a given pressure its still not enough to do what its tuned on.

Most of the time meth failsafes are being utilised on stock bottom end cars (and built motors) which can fail completely independent of there being an actual meth flow/pressure issue. Rods fail when they see excessive mechanical load (in this case we'll use torque) applied to something that is not capable of bearing it. Typically a stock bottom end is somewhere around 400-420 ft lbs in the "safe" zone.

That being said I have seen failures on engines that have a failsafe included as well but the failure was not due to a malfunction of the failsafe, it was as I pointed out the stock bottom end.

I hear you can get a your ECU now a days to switch over to a different map if the meth doesn't come on. But you have to have your meth hooked up to the ECU for it to read it. Is this true? I heard a few tuners talk about it but not sure if anyone has done it yet. It sounds like a good way to go. It's good to have your boost controller hooked up to the ECU also for this to work.

meth map--Meth kicks on and boost goes to it's set limit

safe map-- Meth doesn't come on boost drops to a safe level.

Any tuners can chime in and tell us the right way. or am I some what right?

The time it takes for the ECU to switch to a safe map is enough to still allow damage when things go wonky.

My opinion, don't use meth.

plus, it ****s up your teeth.

a quality intercooler with e85 ftw imo. agree with lancerguy, but meth has its purposes. it will cool things down, more hp, and if tuned to come on at the right time and your block can handle the power with good tuning, why won't you be safe?

well if your choices are:

1. california 91 apple juice

2. E85 (but only 3 stations and all of them over 100 miles away)

or

3. Meth

Meth starts to not look so bad. Its more than just what is "best" its also a matter of location and convenience.

Technically, the E85 station in Brentwood is WAY closer than 100 miles

If we replaced 25 blown engines last year 20 of them had meth on it.. I have 2 sitting here right now both with meth.. Evo X 100psi compression in Cyl 1 the furthest runner from the meth.. Evo 8 piston hurt in cyl 1 the furthest runner from the meth.. Funny thing too is the 8 has 10 psi lower compression in every cyl going down the line 4-1..

In 3 years we have not done 1 single meth kit install and ill keep it that way for 10 more..

Mike
