I bought my Buick Turbo Regal new in '87 and drove it with the stock turbo for a couple years but experienced no compressor surge whatsoever with the totally stock setup except for a K&N filter.

Later, I went through a couple of upgrade TO4 type turbos and experienced varying amounts of surge. The TE-60 was a slow spooler and did not surge. The John Meyers TE-50 whlch was similar to the more widely used TE-44 except for it had a larger, clipped H2 turbine wheel, barked like a sick chipmunk on throttle letoff and whenever accelerating under light load. Eventually, I had to have that turbo rebuilt as the seals went on it.

So, you can experience compressor surge even on an automatic tranny car.
