Post here if you run WITHOUT a blow-off-valve

Let's get a few things out of the way first:
  • Let's hear from people who ACTUALLY run a setup WITHOUT a blow-off-valve
  • Please share how long you've run this setup and what the pro's/con's are
  • Please share if you've suffered turbo failure while running this setup
  • Please, let's not make this a debate about whether or not to run a BOV
  • Please, let's not hear from people making guesses or hearsay stories (eg. my friend's brother's nephew's cousin ran without a BOV and blew his motor)

And, just so we're clear, when I say "without a blow-off-valve" I mean.. without any type of release valve, VTA, recirc, or anything in between... I'm talking straight piping with no valve of any kind whatsoever.

Thanks, in advance!

My Greddy Type-S is set pretty tight so i get a lot of compressor surge below 10psi. Been like that for about 50k miles and no issues. Semi relevant, i know its not what you are looking for though.

The OP is placing a lot of restrictions/qualifying conditions on responses. I want to share but it seems kinda complicated.

In broad terms, if you have a manual tranny with a relatively quick spooling turbo then you are gonna want a BOV/DV IMO. If you have an auto tranny maybe you can get away without a BOV/DV. Most turbo Buicks(GN's etc.) never run a DV BOV.

The fastest 4 cyl in the world doesnt run a bov but then again its basicaly an auto sense it has a dogbox. Now theoretically if you had NLTS I dont see why you would need a bov for drag racing but DD you would still want a bov for when your not at wot and in boost as you can blow icp off, which sucks.

With a turbocharged car equipped with a manual tranny, every time that you let off the throttle to shift you should have some kinda vent valve because(at least on the street) when you let off the throttle the throttle plate shuts and pressure spikes between the throttle plate and the compressor outlet which leads to compressor reversion.

I am fairly old and have somewhat archaic ideas about throttle lift off at shift. I realize that you young whipper snappers don't lift....but just don't embarrass me with the obvious Thanks!

Your dad knows his sheet...so do what he says! I just can't visualize the no-lift movement my own self. But that is just my own personal mental block! Take Care!

I don't run a BOV on the talon. Never have. That being said, I recently purchased one.

I have an auto tranny, so I don't lift to shift, but I still have to lift after the burnout, and after the run. At slower speeds I used to just let up slowly, but now I dump it immediately since the chute is out at the traps and I need to get this terlit stopped before I run out of track. It didn't really help anyway, you could still hear the surge. The small turbo in my compound setup seems unaffected so far. But, at the Jersey event last year Kiggly noticed that my big turbo looked like it was hitting the housing. I thought it was just the patern in the oil it coughs up, but I decided to keep an eye on it. It's now showing signs of contacting the housing. I'll be putting the BOV either between turbos or after both, or both, not sure yet. YMMV.
