Help with broken cams(pics)

I recently pulled my valve cover off to asses a leaking valve and found my camshafts were broken. they are gsc 272's, and they have been installed for about 5 years and have 60k miles on them. im trying to figure out what happened to them and what else ill have to fix? i would also like to know if anyone has a set for sale and if i use the gsc s2's do i need to be retuned? and if i get another brand of 272's do i need a retune or is there a similar enough grind where i dont have to retune?

You can hard weld and regrind the lobe, but it's not cheaper.
I suggest to contact GSC

Sorry I'm no help, but my first thought why are they all in line across the lobes? very weird. Good luck

If they are the 272's then this is the older generation cam, not that it makes any difference in your situation. I would contact GSC about it. Did you buy these cams new or used?

Any change in cam will require a retune.

Those lobes look horrid. I'd be worried by what looks like a chunk of metal taken out of a few of those lobes and where it might of ended up.

Looks like they were smacked hard into the rollers. Lifter issue? Valve Float?

They were brand new 4 years ago so they were defiantly first gen. It's weird that the middle is worn down but not the sides. The rollers have no damage and they ride on the sides of the cams so the motor still runs well.

This is known as fretting. The metal is compressed when the roller runs over it and then springs back. Eventually, the metal lets go. This is mostly seen on ball bearings.

Cam metal is very hard. Hopefully, most of it stayed in the pan.

I remember there being a problem with the first gen GSC 272's. I did a lot of research on GSC's cam lineup for the Evo about 6 months back. Basically comparing the 272's S1's and S2's. Im pretty sure the issue with the first gen 272's was some part of the cam breaks in a similar fashion as yours. Interesting that they were fine for 5 years. Or could you just not notice?

Im no %100 on this. Im recalling from memory and my memory is uhmm.. not so good.

Call GSC. Good luck

Contact GSC they might cut you a deal on some new ones, dont fix these. This is an obvious material failure, and if you have them fixed and regrind them then it'll happen again

Holy crap, I just installed s1's now I'm a bit worried. If everything else looks okay I would still drop the oil pan in hopes of finding those pieces of metal. Good luck man and keep us updated!
