LOUD V8's and/or externally gated cars causing Stock MAF to malfunction on launch...

Can anyone link me to any other threads about this issue? I searched but couldn't find anything. Havent been on here in awhile but surely it's a well known issue by now right?

I'm referring to LOUD V8 cars, externally gated cars, or loud cars in general shutting your stock maf equipped evo down at the launch. Something to do with the sound vibrating the maf and causing the car to just DIE on the launch. I just saw a video of a friend of mine who has a cobra racing an evo and the evo did exactly this on the launch. I'm trying to explain the issue to him but he's not buying it. Anyone have any more info/insight/proof that this issue DOES exist? It happened to me numerous times while I had a few of my cars so I'm sure more people on here must have experience with it. Thanks in advance.

When I'm at the track I race mostly open header V8 cars and have never had the car die on the launch. I will get a little idle dip in the staging lanes sometimes though but it always recovers.

I've read about this before, the OP isn't crazy. Some say it's the MAF, some say it's the knock sensor.

Before switching to SD I'd have idle studdering when a loud whatever would drive by. Usually when I was at a light or waiting to turn. I wouldn't think it should happen while you're getting ready to launch as your engine should be making plenty of noise on it's own.

Yup normal have experienced this for years. Have a Harley pull up next to you at a stop light. Car will stutter down like crazy. Never had mine stall though it's always been able to recover.

^ Same experiance here... I've had the idle stumble due to a loud car and/or motorcycle, never had the car die out on me though.

I'm shocked that no one has pinned down as to why this happens yet. It can be such a headache when a V8 or loud car "scares" the evo into not being able to run. I have a video of exactly what I'm referring to, but I don't think I can post vids of cars racing on evoM right? You can't tell by the video because it's dark, but it is a "closed, sanctioned track".

Def MAF related. I think this issue certainly gets worse once a open filter and even hard pipe are added to the car.

My ex has an RS that retains the stock intake box and I don't recall the issue occurring in her car. My car has always had an open element and hard pipe and will always do this.

Heck when I had the stock hood closing it down w/ car running would make it stumble down sometimes and again I don't remember that noticeably in ex's RS

My friend had this happen to his Evo as well for a while, Harleys did it as well.

Yup its the MAF. I was at a stoplight once and a loud *** harley was next to me. Light turned green and he took off as fast as possible. I tried to drive off normally and noticed that the car didn't budge as I began to let the clutch out.....Looked down and my RPM's were at zero.

Since I've had speed density I've never had this problem again.

Possibly because it was reading improper airflow and was actually knocking.
