120,000 mile DD Evo
So my '03 Evo just turned 120,000 miles yesterday. My friend with basically the same mods as me blew his Evo up about a month and half ago with only having 102,000. I have had the mods on my car for about 3 to 4 months now with no issues yet. (Knock on wood!!) Needless to say I am getting scared about mine blowin up as his did. I am thinking of doing a rebuild to freshen up the bottom end ie. main & rod bearings and new rings. Is this a good idea or should I look into rods/pistons. The car is my DD so I dont want to compremise drivability. Also note I dont plan on going over the stock XI turbo or maybe a FP Red! Also is there a company that makes rods for the stock pistons? My rods are my only concern with 120,000 miles on them now. Thanks

Why did your buddy's evo blow up is the bigger question. Just because his blew doesn't mean yours will too. Too many variables to just say make that assumption.
There are more then a few 200+ evo's with mods on this site that are running fine still.
More info please.

140,5xx and still going strong... Maintenance and the tune are key!!! I put about 10k miles on it in less than 6months due to the fact that I knew I was leaving for deployment...

As long as you have kept up on maintenance I wouldn't worry about it. You don't really know how you friend drove and took care of his car so comparing the two won't do you any good imo. If you are wanting to be cautious the do some tests, compression, fuel pressure, boost leak, leak down, etc. 4G63's are very strong when taken care of, good luck.

I dont wanna just let it blow up thats for sure! My friend that blew his up hasnt got the old engine out to determine what happened. However we did take the head off and piston #2 is missing with pieces scattered all over the engine bay. We looked at what was left of the rod and seems to have broken in the middle. The upper half of the rod is laying in the bottom of the engine along with the wrist pin from what I saw. The night before he blew it up he had it tuned on on E85 by the same guy, Adam Blevins, that tunes all the Evos in this area. The car DLL'ed like 400whp and prior to that it was tuned on pump gas with the stock VIII turbo and only made like 280whp. Also he said that it was 5,000RPM in 3rd gear when it let go.

It better not blow up this time though cause it's getting the works before it goes back together. Keep in mind I had only owned the car for 2 1/2 months before it went BOOM. Apparently the guy who owned before me ran it rich it's whole life and was about to go anyways.
