Syncro or clutch issue?

ok so lately ive been having a hard time getting my car into 3rd and 4th. when i go from second just normally driving around it grinds badly sometimes, and other times it doesnt. and when i go from 3rd to 4th it goes into 4th but when i let out the clutch it will either start grinding or go in. are my syncros dead or could it be a badly adjusted clutch?

You can try bleeding it and see what happens. how high does it release and how many miles you got on it?

its got about 68k miles, what do you mean how high does it release? Also another weird thing is right after my 6262 went on the car it would never want to go into 4th.but with the stock turbo i could go into 4th easily. Also the other day i did a quick 1-2-3 pull nlts all the way through taking it to about 8k each time and it didnt grind.

What clutch are you running? Have you had a clutch on the car in the past that had high RPM lockout issues? If you have, you have probably got damaged teeth on the sides of the gears where they engage. And probably worn synchros as well.

I screwed up when I got my Evo, it had a shot OEM clutch in it and I installed a CC Stage 2. Lockout city once the tach went past 6500. This is a warning sign that your clutch is not fully releasing the tranny and the synchro's and engagement teeth will take a beating. A crappy or ill-adjusted clutch will kill a transmission and cause the stuff you describe.

I had my transmission gone through this summer and the damage was systematic. The guy doing the work showed me exactly how a poorly disengaging clutch can cause the damage. Very educational and expensive.

the car had a clutch in it when i bought it not sure what brand but im guessing act because i looked in the inspection hole and i saw a yellow pressure plate.sometimes i had high rpm lockout but it was rare on the stock turbo, then when i put the 6262 i cant get it into 4th at all at high rpms. Now third grinds when going into it and 4th doesn't grind untill i let out the clutch, and it only grinds sometimes.

sounds like a damaged 3/4 shift fork.

My 3rd synchro was nearly gone. Had to carefully rev match 2-3 and you could not go from 4-3.

Ended up having to completely replace 3rd gear because it was chewed up.

But now it's a shep trans.
