Why would a clutch cause only one gear to grind, especially 5th ? I only use 5th for crusing and never even shifted fast into it.

Evo's have been grinding 5th since 2003...

The synchros wear because of the ratio gap between 4th/5th gear, which is why it doesn't happen in any other gear.

It doesn't matter what trans you get, they all have the same potential.

I have heard a double synchro 5th gear will help but it is extra, how much I don't know.

My Shep tranny scratches in 5th as well. It has only been in the car since the beginning of the year, and its not a daily driver. Doubt I'll be going back to Shep next time around.

My stock trans held up to 94k beating the living sh** out of it. Never grinded any gears until one day it just wouldnt go into 4th and I ended up getting a stock rebuilt trans. I sent the new trans to shep to get rebuilt for 900 since my motor was being built and making more power and somehow I ended up with a $3200 bill. They told me my hub and all other stuff was wrong with it when I never had any problems with it. After that bill I use the trans for couple thousand miles and my 4th starts to grind and I send it back. They tell me my reverse is shot and my 4th and somehow charged me 700 to fix it. Now I got 5th grinding after couple thousand miles..wow

i know this is a shep trans thread, but I was wondering if anyone has tried a dogbox trans rebuild? They seem to be pretty comparable in price and I am pretty sure they know transmissions.

There were some folks on the Colorado Evo forum that have discussed similar issues (not specifically anyone's transmissions, aftermarket or OEM). From my non-technical understanding it sounded like the problem is with improperly adjusted multi-plate clutches which basically never fully disengage. Having a clutch that drags slightly will accelerate the wear on the syncros because this partial disengagement is similar to you trying to shift with only pressing halfway down on the clutch pedal...unless you rev match perfectly, there'll be some grinding.

I agree with you entirely, very few people properly adjust there clutches after installing a new trans, clutch or doing work that may have changed anything in the clutch self adjusting system. Hydraulic clutches are all very similar and require setting correctly to function properly. I am a little particular about setting clutches properly for full clutch disengagement. I have seen Exedy Twin HD pressure plate side floater discs get so over heated and warped that they were unuseable within 3-5k miles. Owner stated everything was fine until I showed him the parts that just came off his car.

The main reason this is an issue with 5th on the 5spds, in my opinion, is the gear ratio drop and the single synchro. 1-4th are all multi synchro's IIRC. I'm not the trans expert on here though just know what works well for me.

Got another Evo?

I had the works done by Shep (including the ultimate gearing) and had no issues. My Carbonetics feels like its time to replace some discs (Triple Carbon) but other then that no issues........30k+ later.
