Ouch!!! I loved the 6spd in my car but I am glad I got rid of it before anything like this had a chance to pop up!!! The only thing I dont like about my swap is that I dont have a taller 5th gear... Besides that its butter

Friend of mine lost two 6sp's in the same fashion as the original poster.
Selector jammed/broke and the rest is history.

He changes with NO mechanical sympathy though, so bound to happen eventually to any box.

Ya know... that's really the best kind of mind-set to have with these machines. Things will break.. upgrade if possible, if not... replace and move on.

True, however I think its stupid to smash gears at any time, unless 1/4 racing.
On the track, you lose what, 1/2sec by changing quickly and smoothly, and your box lasts many season.

His first box a corner cracked off the selector jamming it in 2nd.
Second box it jammed in the gears on a 4th gear pull on the dyno exiting the bottom of the casing.

Oh god.. So it's worth banging gears in the 1/4 for that .1 or .2 while it's not worth banging gears at the track for that half a second?

The straight line mentality never stops to amaze me. Especially when the evo wasn't even meant to go straight.

quick update,

took everything apart for inspection and cleaning.. The gearbox is basically a writeoff, but the casing is ok, apart from minor scratches on the inside..
Even though parts were flying all over, and chrashing the gears, the final drive and centre diff is ok.

I took the transfer box apart, and even though it shares the oil with the gearbox, is was pretty much clean... Took the front diff apart, as it is impossible to clean otherwise... torqued it back up and glued the threads again..

The car is a EUDM E9, so ACD is present..

I just cleaned it really well, and changed the O rings..

The gearbox I bought to provide the spare parts was a peach... really low mileage, and really clean on the inside..

I spent quite a lot of elbow grease and degreaser on my housing.. I wanted to get rid of all the metal shavings..

I am pretty handy with a spanner, but was worried about getting the assembly right. The shift rod check ***** and springs assembly look like a potential problem, but they are not.. following the manual was simple enough..

I even did the shaft axial play check, which was nedeed as I did instert the whole set of gears into another gear case...

ready for installation... was going to do it this WE but ran out of time..

Finally assembled the car.. using friends ultra cool garage..

Need to do the wheel alignment.. Also, changed the rear AYC diff... The housing actually broke because of the forces involved when the gearbox got blocked by debris..

It seems that the gears in the diff are fine, it was just the housing that broke because of the twisting forces... IT is not a concern for USA evo's (up to X) as you do not have AYC diff and it looks like the AYC diff has a weak housing..
