ok, here's the plan....

step 1: go to fridge, pull out your favorite beverage, head towards the garage, unbolt your current turbo, bolt in the hks, then tune & data log.

step 2: go to fridge, pull out your favorite beverage, head towards the garage, unbolt the hks turbo, bolt in the bbk, then tune & data log.

step 3: go to fridge, pull out your favorite beverage, head towards the laptop, review data, produce overlays & post results

step 4: go to fridge, pull out your favorite beverage, relax

for extra credit (as if i wasnt reviewing my kids homework!!)

Bonus: go to fridge, pull out your favorite beverage, head towards the garage, bolt that new header onto your favorite turbo......you get the idea!!

Nice pics

If I decide to DIY, the first turbo (and manifold) goes on on Monday.

Ah these two choices have been making me lose sleep at night. Finally this is what I wanted to see! Have you measured each of the wheels to compare? So you believe the GTII will make about the same power but spool quicker? Any downsides you notice between them?

You can do it buddy! That BBK looks awfully sexy, I miss it! I hope it gives you as many smiles as it did for me. That HKS turbo looks alright too

The monster circlip on the OEM compressor housing looks like a potential emergency room visit. Not much else to stop me except lack of time.

With several GTIIs scheduled to hit the dyno soon, I'll forgo with the bench racing. :-) In terms of construction, both are very nice. The GTII turbo kit includes all the gaskets, new water, and new oil lines. Two things I noticed about the GTII: 1) The WGA on the GTII is very nifty looking, but after setting the preload on it today, I realized that the design causes the relatively small diameter turnbuckle bolt to experience fairly signficant bending loads (I can visibly see it bending with typical preload levels), and I get the impression that the turnbuckle bolt could fatigue crack. Time will tell. 2) The hotside inlet passage "A" has a fairly abrupt edge that seems like it could cause a bunch of turbulence. I plan to smooth it out a bit.

The DIY option is more a time issue than anything else. Hey, when I was looking over your BBK today, I realized that the WGA basically had no preload on it. I could open the WG flapper slightly by pushing on it from inside the turbo. When it was on your car, I think you might have been giving up a bit of power because of that. Needless-to-say, I tightened that puppy up a few turns. :-)

Nice pornography Fred. Quite provocative really. Judging from your pics of the turbine inlet area, the HKS housing could benefit from some massaging. Especially those shelf areas which you noted beyond the entrance troughs to the WG bypass ports. Porting those areas should improve topend significantly.

Very interested in results and thank you for the pics. I had no idea the HKS was coming when I pulled the trigger on my BBK Full in early summer. I think this turbo has caught a lot of people off guard.
