Engine Smoking: Determining the culprit....

Guys

I have a ton of experience putting cars together. I've had the pleasure of building a few personal 600+whp cars, and even a 750+whp car.

Over the course of this time, one thing I have not properly learned how to do, is determine why an engine 'smokes'. I could tell you that it should normally be from either a worn turbo seal, old/bad valve stem seals, a headgasket, or even a bad ring.

A customer of mine had me pull his stock 50k engine so he could trade a forum member for their buschur 2.3L setup. The whole process took about 4 days from start to finish, and after firing the car up last night and letting it idle for probably 30 mins, I've noticed its smoking way more than it should be. Typically in our crap weather you'll get some condensation in the exhaust that will burn out, but even after driving the car for 10-15 minutes its still smoking decently. The smoke smells of oil, but it is not a strong smell.

I am curious what's everyones methods for determining what the actual problem is.....

Compression/Leak down test will probably tell you a lot. Start there.

what this^^^ guy said...or since your smellin a smokin smell you can do an exhaust smoke test, and see if you can see where you smell it comin from...id double check all your exhaust bolts for any missing ones startin at test pipe and goin all the way up to xhaust manifold to head gasket...my guess good luck
