Main Bearing Oil Clearance
I startd to reassemble my motor today after an unfortunate shattered piston a few months back, anyways i got as far as test fitting the crank in the mains, and with the platigauge i got .0015 .003 .003 .002 .0015 from front to back. Now my machinest told me to shoot for .0015, i havent got a chance to talk to him yet so i wanted to see what you guys had to say. Is that .003 going to be to loose or is that within spec, i was unable to find oem spec. By the way its a stock build other then the forged pistons on an 03.

i ran 0.002 for big ends and 0.0024-0.0026 for mains.
i would be worried that your tolerances are the same. is the crankshaft bent? is the mains tunnel warped? mains cradle bent?
tolerances used will depend on what oil you are going to run.
i'm running 15W50 with no problems, 85psi oil pressure max with balance shafts delete and kiggly HLA regulator

I dont know what had happened to the block prior to it being in my possesion, i had purchased it from a guy on here about a year ago, needless to say when it arrived it was less then perfect. My machinest had to align hone the mains, bore and hone the cylinders, and deck the block surface. The crank wasnt bent he made sure that it wasnt and then polished it for me. Now i talked to the machinest today and he said i could bring it back to him and he would do some additional work to it or i could just roll with it because its still within limit. Now the obvious choice would be to take it back to him however hes 2 hours from me so its hard for me to make that drive when hes telling me that it will be fine. Its not like im buildig a full blown race motor, for the most part the car wont see anything other then stock maybe some bolt ons down the road and the occasional drive threw the mountains. Im just trying to get some fellow evo owners input.

i have done this a bunch you should take it back to him and let him do it right the first time out for you because if something happens down the road it will always be in the back of your head was this the reason for this happening. i think it will be worth it.

If you're running 10w30 and not crazy power levels, you should shoot for near-stock clearances. In untouched DSM engines they were usually in the 0.002-0.0025" range. In the drag car I'm running 0.004" now with 25w50. I wouldn't want to try this loose of oil clearance on light oil though.
I'm also more concerned with the variance from one to the next. They should all be very similar, but plastigage is a terrible tool compared to a bore gauge. I wouldn't trust plastigage to even 0.001" accuracy.
