New BW EFR Turbo Thread

How many people on here have received, perhaps are about to receive EFRs with this turbine housing?

if they are confirmed actual borg warners, that is unacceptable. i wouldnt put that on my car. i dont know how they got the twinscroll ewg housings so perfect and failed so bad on those. my housing was so perfect it looked like it was ported and smoothed by a pro, then media blasted.

Some of the more interesting quotes for those not wanting to read the whole thing:
The complexity of the twin scroll, twin waste-gated design had a rejection rate of over 60% at the foundry with investment casting. Borg Warner tried three different suppliers for the investment cast components, all with the same results. As a result, they switched to green-sand casting around May of this year.
I just spoke with Brian Rhinehart of Borg Warner manufacturing directly. Unfortunately, the photos I have posted are of a genuine Borg Warner EFR 7670 twin scroll turbo. This is how all new EFR units will be manufactured until they can significantly improve the rejection rate of the investment cast units. I asked for a timeframe of when they expect to have units available with investment cast turbine housings, but at the moment, they have no idea. If you or someone you know received an early EFR with the investment cast turbine housing, consider yourself/them lucky.
ON THE OTHER HAND, Brian informed me that Borg Warner conducted extensive flow testing of the green-sand cast units and, while they are not as pretty to look at, the results were all well within the margin of error (less than 1%). In other words, the ugly units perform just as well as the pretty, investment cast units.
That being said, I'm still not 100% satisfied with the inside passages of my specific turbine housing. I may return it for an identical unit if they are still in stock, provided I can get some indication that the replacement will have a better finish.

Just talked to Jon @ Full Race who also confirmed that BW have changed the manufacturing process on these to ramp up the production rate.
He did say that particular one in the bimmer forum thread above was the worst he has seen though.

I just got mine and mine is just as bad as the one in the pics including the far off-centre bolt holes. I've been waiting so long that I'm just going to fill in one side on the turbine entry to make it smaller and symmetrical because I'll be blocking the internal gate anyway so may as well block it using a couple of bits of stainless plate to better direct air into the housing.

That casting finish isn't confined to the twin scroll IWG housings. Look at the photos of the 6258 on full-race's website and you will see more of the same:

Makes you wonder how Garrett, MHI, and Holset manage to cast "normal" looking turbine housings, even twin-scroll IWG...

Seems like the price has been dropped on the turbos to make up for the new housings.
If they flow within the 1% of the investment cast and cost around 1800-2100, depending on choice of turbo, I am happy.

just got my turbo (.92 7670)
here are pics of the turbine housing (best camera i have is a point and shoot)
if you want any specific pics of the housing just let me know. i'll work on getting them

Looks like it was cleaned up on the inside with a flapper wheel or something?
Realistically speaking though, we are talking about an ugly STAINLESS STEEL twinscroll housing vs. a cast steel twinscroll housing that is well known to crack under racing conditions.
Expecting one thing and getting something else after a 2 year wait is probably mind blowingly frustrating, but a cast stainless divided housing is a step in the right direction overall compared to where we were yesterday.

It is definitely all relative. I would be spewing if I had paid and waited for the investment cast turbine housing - but for those who are paying less for and getting these and the fact that they are within range of the originally advertised units in flow etc then that really isn't too bad... at least we are seeing that the turbos perform ok and don't sound like they are the grenades of not too long ago anymore.
