GSC 280 cams 0r.....

I have an EVO VIII and im looking to put some big cams in it. I have a set of GSC 280 aggressive cams. Ive been hearing mixed things about them. Ive heard they are real good and also bad..i need some input on them. I also have a set of BC 272 cams and have been hearing the same about them.

All my car has done to it right now is Exedy twin plate clutch. Stage 1 Tranny upgrade. Exhaust and intake. HKS 264 cams.

Definitely don't go with the BC cams. I had them in my car and they don't make good power...I swapped with kelford 280/276 and gained some hp but they dont seem to flow with my set up for some reason. I think I will try a set of S2's next

S3s on a stock turbo with your mods will loose below 6800. We have tested it on a stock 2.0L with a stock IX turbo. The S3s are truly meant for a car that makes 650+whp with either a big turbo on a 2.0 or a 2.4 with a "smaller" big turbo.

^That from a guy making 748whp.

I heard the buschur 272 are the most agressive of the 272's from someone on here. I don't know if its true but buschur makes good parts. That is what I am going to use.

These cams will not work on a stock motor you have to have the motor built and head for clearance or else the cams will effect the valves and touch the pistons.

Unless you're going to build the engine and put a big turbo on it, stay away from cams that big. Those will kill bottom and mid-range power.

That is because of old technology and design. The new cams like the S2s spool identical to the S1s but make 25whp more. Spool is really realative to ramp rate.

Here is my car that was a back to back HKS cams to custom GSC. My GSCs have the same effective duration as a 288 cam Notice spool is identical. Nothing was changed in this back to back but the cams. Spool really depends on the cam design. Also any stock motor car looking to make the best power and keep great spool should be running S2s.

Here's the deal with cam that use. You want as much lift and as little duration as possible, unfortunately at 11.7mm 280+ is about as tight as it get's. As far as "dont use big cam on little turbo" theory, like it was stated, thats either old or downright wrong info. I have tried S2/S2 and S3/S2 combinations with a stock framed small turbo (full) and depending on cam timing there was no forfeit in torque, spool, or whatever. The original cams were a 5 year old set of gsc 264s with 70,000 miles on them, which had better spool than the old hks in the day. More interesting was when I had the s3 in the exhaust, with -2in and -2 ex the car had the fastes spool and hardest hitting torque it ever had. It would have broken parts eventually.

The only drawback using big cams (esp s3) is the idle with stock MAF, advancing the exhaust helps though.

Having a IX large Cams idle much better due to the ability to change the cam lobe separation at idle.
