Rattling noise with whine

First thread here:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...sfer-case.html

Originally, I thought my problem was a drivetrain problem.

Today, I realized it can't be.

The rattle noise with whine occurs at three different moments:

1. Idle BUT ONLY when I high rev it not while its on regular idle. While underneath the car, I observe the noise coming directly by the pulley area. It occurs right after the rev is coming down and the tensior pulley had moved.
2. While driving and pressing the clutch in and letting the car coast.
3. While driving in gear and slightly accelerating. The higher speed I go the louder it gets. It's loudest during the slightest acceleration in low rpm.

Recently I did a serpentine belt replacement, since mine had broken while driving. I drove the car for about 1 mile before realizing this. Stopped the car, replaced the belt, and there was no noises.

Noises began a couple of days later. The noise began occuring as a loud whine during 1st and 2nd gear while WOT around 5k-7k rpm only.

Is this a motor releted problem? Pulley related problem? Ac? Power steering? Bearing?

I've read over 100 threads and couldn't find the answer. I would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

-Alex

So it's a rattle AND a whine or 2 seperate noises occiring at different times?

First I would take off your serp belt and spin all the pulleys, make sure everything spins freely and has no side to side play. Wiggle it in and out, left to right, top to bottom, etc.

If you can make the noise with the car at a stop, make the noise and get a long screwdriver/extension/or even broomhandle etc (without the broom obviously) and put it on each spinning part...the alternator, p/s pump, water pump, idler pulley, tensioner, etc and put the other end up to your ear...it acts like a stethoscope and you will hear each thing spinning loud and clear.

Try those 2 things and go from there

Did the belt break because it was so cracked and finally let go? or maybe something else like a loose pulley/bad tensioner? and have you tried it without running the belt and see if it still makes the noise? obviously not long since you won't have water pump and alternator

Sounds like something with the serp belt pulleys or tensioner. Would make sense since you recently broke and replaced the belt.

The whine only occurs while driving. The rattle occurs while stopped and driving. I believe it is the belt whining cause maybe its not tight?

I will try to check the pulleys this weekend and do the sound test as well with the rod.

My belt just broke, I don't know what caused it.

How do i test the tensioner? When I rev it, it seems to move about 1/2 - 1 inch. Is this normal or its loose?

Thanks

-Alex.

That might be normal, but I'm new with playing with these motors so I don't really know. But it's going to have some of that play so it can soak up the slack when the crank turns it pulls the belt on one side and causes somewhat of slack on the other side...if that made sense

So I checked the pulleys. The tensioner pulley is making the noise. Seems like the bearings have gone out. Does anyone have a part number for it? Do I have to order the entire auto-tensioner to replace it?

I checked mitsubishiparts.net and #31 says tension pulley, but the description says "PULLEY-TIMING BEL". I attached the parts diagram for some added input.

Thanks.

Prob can't just get the pulley unless from the dealer but depends where ya wanna get it from. Wouldn't hurt to replace the whole thing tho since tensioners wear out and you don't want a loose belt tension. Call up the dealer and your sources see what they sell....if they sell only the assembly then it doesn't matter since that's all they got anyway
