Built engine oil consumtion

I'm interested in what people think is reasonable oil consumption on a built 2ltr, which has been constructed as a daily driver, just driving on the street during regular driving.

I have heard all figures from none, to a quart every 1000 miles. Remember this is a daily driver with tolerances to match, during regular road work. If you have experience of different pistons influencing this I'd be interested in that as well. Thanks.

none at all my built 2.0 consumed no oil at all for the 15k miles i ran it before it was torn down to build my 2.3 stroker. So thats my answer none a built motor new or used should never consume any oil what so ever.

I agree 100%. I know some builders have reasons for oil consumption, but I was always taught if you are burning oil, there are issues with the motor (either leading to less than optimal performance or indicating a problem about to become bad). I also recall the builder running tests to determine if it was a head issue or a piston issue (leak down vs compression).

The other potential issue is the motor is higher compression and could benefit from a Kiggly HLA to help prevent / reduce oil from blowing out of the head.

Interesting. Leak down is 5% or so, compression test 155 Psi +/- 5 psi or so. I'm wondering if it's a crankcase pressurisation issue,

^ A properly built motor should have little to no oil consumption. If consumption is internal to the motor it can be from valve stem seals or oil control rings. In such cases it would not show during leak down or compression check.

I have spoken with two other members who purchased engines from a reputable vendor on this site and both had significant oil consumption issues.

Can you quantify the oil loss? 1qt per 1K miles....etc.

Hey Marcel long time no hear

To give you something to compare to, based on some of the cars I've owned/built.
All 3 non-built engined VIII's I've had used a little oil, around 500ml every 4500miles.
When we built Ben6's VI (you may remember the 18 page thread), it had 42k on the clock and bores just required a light hone to break the glaze on the top/bottom thrust face, all tolerences were within spec for Wisco 85mm pistons. It has covered around 15k since the build, much of which is track days and trips to the nurburgring. It uses Fuchs Titan 5w-40 and uses none between changes every 3/4k.
The 2.3 stroker in my IX as you know was built by Mark Shead, again it runs Fuchs Titan 5w-40 and uses no oil between changes every 3/4k.
This is just my personal experience, I know lots of people with built motors that use a little oil but nothing excessive considering the hard use they get.

Are you suffereing oil consumption issues on a built motor then?

Humm, Sheady does seem to have a good rep for builds.

I would have thought 500 ml ( a pint ) is about right for any engine per 4500 miles. I'm losing that in 320 miles.

Good info, thanks guys.

So the general consensus is no oil usage is possible. Anyone any idea why my leakdowns are OK but oil use is very high?

poor oil ring seal may make compression higher. oil on cylinder wall will improve compression. this is sign that cylinder walls either were not honed correctly, or were not cleaned thoroughly after hone. carbon will build up really fast on top of piston. which eventually causes detonation.

I recommend alky injection.

So are you saying that if the oil control ring is faulty, then the compression test will be higher than expected? What about the leak down test? That was about 5%

I recommend alky injection.
For what? To remove carbon build up or just cos it's fun? BTW I have an Aquamist setup.

I had 2.3L and it was burning oil since day 1 when I got it from AMS, I thought it was just normal with a built engine and of course the way I run.

If you are doing just general street driving, what is you oil consumption?

My car use to burn 1 to 1 1/2 quarts a week depending on how hard I drove. My evo was a 600+awhp pump gas evo.

How many miles a week was that?
