Quest for quiet high flow exhaust

Hey guys,

I know a lot of guys like me always want to know whats a relatively quiet and highflow exhaust combo. One with no drone, sounds pretty nice, won't get the cops on your ***, makes power etc. I thought I'd share my experience.

I originally bought my car with a HKS turboback, megan resonated testpipe and downpipe. It was actually a rather quiet exhaust setup for a full 3inch turboback with no cat. But the drone at highway speeds was unbearable. Especially if I had my windows half way down.

I switched the testpipe and catback to a 3.5inch catco and JIC spartan DE combo. The spool was blunted a little. I also should say the exhaust looks like a normal oval unit but its actually a straight through design. Great flow, yet fools the cops into thinking its OE-ish. Even the inspection center gave it the pass. Can't beat it! The sound of the JIC vs the HKS can be described as deeper, and much smoother. The HKS is more boy-racer whereas the JIC sounds more european in comparison. It was noticeably quieter on idle, much quieter on acceleration, and had much less drone. No one will mistake the sound for stock I don't think, but cops gave it the approving I-won't-ticket-you nod as I passed by.

Recently I put the testpipe back in. And the exhaust got....quieter. This was the quietest setup on my car so far! And spool was quicker and spiked higher than with the cat. I'm guessing its because even though the cat was 3.5inch 200cells it still promoted turbulent flow over laminar flow through it, which is much less efficient and noisier. Cross-sectional area is not the end-all in flow rate and efficiency. And the test pipe is resonated, which I think helps the noise factor a lot. The drone is also now practically gone. My stereo sounds A LOT better now, lol. And idle is quieter too. I think I've hit upon the ideal exhaust combo for me. Its pretty quiet, is still a full 3inch high flow unit, and sounds pretty good.

Hopefully you find this useful if you're looking for a quiet highflow exhaust too. I could upload vids if people are interested, but I always find those youtube vids so useless, lol. They only give you an idea of the pitch and sound of the exhaust, and very little idea about the drone and loudness.

,
Dee

The other idea I'm sure you've heard about came from Buschur as far as I know.

If you put a second muffler where your cat goes it does a good job quieting the car that much more, but doesn't disturb the flow much. It also can throw off curious cat inspecting officials.

I believe he's done before and after dynos on it with acceptable loses. I think he ran that 2 muffler setup on badbish.

Yea I've heard of buschurs 2 muffler setup. I'm not really a fan of his exhaust's tone though. And I don't like the idea of extra weight in the exhaust system. Mine is pretty light right now. From the downpipe to the tip I've held it and it weighs maybe 25-35lbs. Plus its already very quiet. With an extra muffler it will sound like the car two lanes from me is going full throttle (with my windows up), not me.

Btw this is what my tip looks like:

Squint on this next one, you can kinda see it through the smoke (sorry this is the best I got!)

This is what it looked like before:

Its still a full 3 inch like the HKS but doesn't look like a mellon launcher anymore. And with the new kartboy bushings I put in last week the tip sits closer to the bumper and looks super clean.

EDIT: The whole muffler section btw is polished. But I spray canned everything except for tip dark grey like the "diffuser" since it looked too ricey for me.

Loving the dirty evo drifting in the snow!

I recently changed my exhaust on my mirage, and it was one of the best mods i've done.
So so much quieter, i used a 5"x11" oval, 22" long Magnaflow muffler. (mounted sideways at the rear of the car)
That combined with a 4" intercooler i picked up 45whp too!

Cheers, Mike

To the OP. Since you're running this exhaust with a JDM IX bumper, I assume that it would fit OK with my JDM VIII bumper?

Mike: What was your old exhaust setup? Also, what IC were you running before going to the 4 incher? Nice power gain BTW

Woah nice. Gains probably came more off the intercooler though.

The JIC? Yea its supposed to be for USDM fitment but there was zero issues. I went the extra mile and rewelded hangers though for my bumper.

i went from a 80mm tube and fin to a 100mm bar and plate. (both generic/ebay style)
in the rear of the car i had 2x cheap chambered mufflers (it's really hard to get nice quality mufflers here).
I replaced those 2 mufflers with the single magnaflow, and it's much quieter and picked up heaps of power.
You can actually hear that the restriction has gone (hissing sound)! 23/24psi on the FP Red is now 420whp

Talk to chris from map performance we just did a group buy on varex mufflers and they can be quiet when you want them and loud when they need to be for flow. here is a link to the thread I started https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...t-exhaust.html

Yup I've seen the varex in person. My friend has one on his subaru. It really does quieten the car down when closed but I have my own reservations against it.

Ya sure I'll try. Will be in the next few days hopefully.

I don't think I have any vids from when I had the HKS other than at the drag strip and road course, which isn't too useful, lol.
