If I were you, just pick up a used 8 block, buy the internals, and build it yourself. Easily be under the 3k budget.

Don't forget to replace your oil cooler and lines as well. You're lucky you only toasted the block. The #2 rod that snapped on mine windowed the block, trashed the oil pan, and took out the radiator and t-case as well. If you go with a 4G64 you could possibly end up near your 3k spending limit, but its going to be hard. I spent close to 7k to get mine running, and I'm back on a stock turbo b/c the FP Red that came on the car was pretty much toast when I got it (thanks previous owner).

let me answer the question for him....the motor blew.. thats how.

on a stock block specially on the left side of the graph 400ft tq was the limit where things start flying everywhere.. around or under 350ft tq is where Realiblity is found.

if you have the time and knowlegde go for it, just make sure you machine shop you can trust and factor in the unexpected.

if not i would just pick up a short block and be done with it, no hassles, no room for errors.. GL

I'd stay below 550wtq with H beams, just to be safe.
