Help! 5 Speed or 6 Speed
Hi
Iam Undecided to go 5 speed or a 6 speed , My Car is an 06 IX MR currently with the 6 speed messed up
I Have an Exedy Twin HD Clutch
I also noticed 6 speed sell cheaper than 5 speed
I know some people say 5 speed is better , but i think they say that referring to 1/4 and launching the car (The Time Attack car in Forza 3 is 5 speed lol)
I don't autocross , but who knows in the future if i will , so lets consider autocross in the future.
I dont go to the 1/4 with my car and never will (Maybe one time , to see how much it puts lol)
I race in the streets always from a Roll , ( I have never launched ) ( Maybe i will once to see how it feels lol) only do races once a week.
I daily drive this Bad Boy
What do you guys say i should get
I need some expert opinions on these Please

I personally like a 5 speed better. I like winding out the gears longer and felt like you shift too much with a 6 speed (comparing to a 350z I used to own). Like others said 6 speed is great for highway driving.
I've also heard the overall volume of the 6 speed tranny is the same as the 5 speed. This results in smaller gears for the 6 so it's overall weaker. True? Something to think about if your gonna be doing lots of mods.

The failures I've read about the 6-speed having are related to track use, i.e. extended periods of hot running, and inadequate oiling as a result.
Plus the 6 speed puts you at lower RPM when cruising on the highway, making it slightly easier to have a conversation

Shep built 6 speed . I've heard quite the opposite about the 6 speed being the same size in volume as the 5 speed. In fact I heard its easier to take the 5 speed out than it is the 6.

Anybody saying the 6-spd is stronger than the 5-spd is smoking crack. Have you seen the size of the gears? The 6-spd has gears that are tiny compared to the OEM gears in the 5-spd. The 6-spd gets inadequate cooling, has weaker, smaller gears, making it far more prone to breaking than the 5-spd. If you call up John Shepherd he will tell you that the built 6-spd is stronger than its OEM counterpart but is still the weaker of the two transmissions. The benefit of the 6-spd is quieter high speed operation due to lower rpms. How fast is your highway driving though? I found by changing to the 5-spd my gearing was perfect for the track and it keeps my speed within reasonable cruising limits on the highway.
Again, if you are under 400 whp, have a working 6-spd, and don't do a lot of launches or extended road racing... stick with the 6-spd, otherwise you will probably find yourself upgrading and might as well go to the strongest available option outside of a dogbox.

yup as everyone says...5 speed. I love my 5 speed to death. the 6 speed if for the birds..
If you were satified with your old 6 speed get a 6 speed. If you plan on getting big power later do 5 speed. Its about what makes you happy in the end.
