Oil Recommendations
#17
BTW, my upstairs neighbor is about to get smacked in the mowf with an open hand. He plays COD and has been screaming like Rick Flare for the past hour. He really has no idea that we're 1-minute away from having a cage-match in his living room if he doesn't simmer down.

I guess I was wrong about the AMSOIL dealer lurking (or he is waiting until post #10 to prove me wrong)
With AAFES, it's either regular Mobil-1 (no HM), Royal Purple (don't have lawnmower), non-german castrol (go figure), or Penzoil. No one will ship oil/haz over the pond, so neither Redline nor Amsoil are an option.

Maybe it's packing requirements finally being enforced by USPS? Maybe requiring enough absorption material to soak up leaks? I work special handling (haz inspector) in the air force and hazmat is categorized, among other ways, in packing groups (PGs) and each require a certain level of absorption material as well as only certain styles of containers to be used.
In the case of commodity goods like oils and antifreeze that aren't necessarily "Haz" (unless the flash point on oil is below a certain point), it could be a new IATA requirement (or old one that USPS decided to now enforce) that is dictating a change in packing procedures. This would fall under IATA and not CFR...which I do not have a copy at home (nor do I bring work home with me). It could also fall under some EPA BS for the environment. Luckily, I use AFMAN 24-204 for my job and not civilian/international regs.
What I do know is that the the big sellers Summit/Jegs will not ship oil by air and neither will any of the redline dealers that used to ship APO. It must be too much of a hassle? If Amsoil is still shipping APO, I might check them out.

I am acully on here looking for inputs for a different oil because I am currently running M1 0-40 and have never had so much engine noise (lifter tick... and what not) I am in So Cal so if pretty worm here and when the oil worms up it just doesnt seem to perform like some of the other oils Ive used.
I am no oil expert and or anything I just know what the car feels, sounds like and oil cleanlenss after miles and im not sold on it. whould like like something a little thicker. back when I had my 03 VIII i was runing a 20-40 i think it was, in something else thats no longer around, and loved it year round.

Here in Oz Amsoil is very expensive and Redline just plain ridiculous , even Mobil 1 pricey unless you know where to get it here .
My old but rebuilt 86 Soobie RX Turbo is trialing a blend of 3 quarts of Mobil 1 0W40 and 1 quart of Mobil 4T Racing 10W40 . Its winter ATM so the temperatures are about 10C overnight and ~ 20 in the daytime .
I had been running Mobil 1 4T 15W50 and I feel the difference that the less viscous oil gives . Idles slightly faster and feels a bit more zippy down low .
My plan for my 99 Evo VI is to blend 3 quarts of M1 0w40 with 2 quarts of M1 4T 10W40 . My reasoning is to lose some heavy oil drag and the motorcycle M1 will boost the ZDDP levels of the M1 0W40 .
From memory the Zinc and Phos levels are 1000 and 1100 for the 0W40 and 1600 and 1700 for the 4T 10W40 .
In theory the Zn and Phos should come out at 1240 and 1340 .
I wish Mobil would bring out 0W40 and 0W30 synthetics with these levels of anti wear additives but they don't . I believe their synthetic 15W50 is still good but its hard to get here and too high a viscosity rating anyway .
Don't be fooled by their 5W50 synthetic because ZDDP wise it isn't any better than 800 900 0W30 .
Cheers A .

Vr1
I've been running Valvoline VR1 20w50 in my 03 for the better part of 4 years and have had no issues with it at all. It was recommended to me by the guy that tuned me to 25psi on the stock turbo. I'll probably stay with the same oil unless I get another recommendation. Also, even during the winters up at Ft. Drum, I never had any real issues cranking up in the morning, just let it warm up before I drove off.
