Help! Best turbo/motor set-up for Time Attack and Road Racing?
UPDATE ON PAGE 5
Hello EvoM I need your help and advice. In a few months I plan on finally adding some power to the motor in my track car (Evo 9 MR). I run the car in a couple of Time Attack series here in the southwest, while the car does quite well given the current horsepower I feel I need some more HP to be super competitive. Thus comes your help. I would like the see the car make close to 450whp with a stock frame turbo and be super reliable with close to stock spool characteristics. I plan on running E85.
The car currently has Invidia 02 housing, JIC D.P., JIC Exhaust, KN drop in, Nisei Full Pipe kit. ARC intercooler. Car has swapped 5 speed.
I am completely lost. I Have read thread after thread and I have got no where....
Turbo-
BBK?
HKS 7460?
New MAP turbo?
Cams-
GSC 1's
GSC 2's
Kelfords?
Cossies?
Better intercooler???
New turbo manifold????
Pic of car---

I think you have the hardest part taken care of which is identifying the purpose of the car and the power level to make it successful. With E85 you will have absolutely no problems hitting those targets safely.
Cam choice, honestly you will be fine with any of the listed cams. I have Kelford 272s and like them quite a bit, but I've heard nothing but positive things about the GSC S2s as well.
Turbo is kind of the same deal, you have a good number of options that will perform well, namely HKS 7460, FP HTA Green, and BBK-Full. Again, I love my BBK-Full, but I run pump gas because the tracks I run at do not offer E85 and I don't have a trailer to bring my own fuel. I'm not a huge fan of the HKS turbo because its very expensive, has a reputation for surging problems, and doesn't flow as much as the Green or BBK.
With your current mods though, any one of those cams and turbo on E85 you will hit 450 whp easy with great spool. With that kind of power what are the mods on your suspension looking like? Some good coilovers, chassis bracing etc will give you the best reductions in time assuming you are already running on competitive tires. If you are serious about it, you should definitely consider getting a custom roll cage built. In addition to the obvious safety advantages its unbelievable how much better the car handles with a cage stiffening up the chassis.

GET the MAP EF3 TURBO, and thier long runner tubular manifold. That said, thier v-band o2 eliminator downpipe will be a MAJOR upgrade to your combo. Try sell your restrictive bits for cheap. Make sure you dont have exhaust tapers UNDER 3" at the to-downpipe flange, and remove any resonator/cat in the system. Muffler choice (VOLUME) is up to you...
The EF3 hotside must be had ported and coated (+90$), and its better to have everything coated to save weight in heat barriers, and gain power... THAT IS ~3something k$ TOTAL
If you dont have cams, GET EITHER A GSC S2 OR TOMEI PROCAM 270!! That, together with some H11 head studs, and Kiggly beehive valvetrain should be around another 1k$.
As for intercooler, make sure that there is no taper UNDER 2.5". STOCK, AND MOST PROBABLY ARC has ~2.16"... CUSTOM MODIFY them locally if so...
A GOOD TUNE IS NOW MANDATORY, SO THAT IS ANOTHER 300-400$ and OPTIONAL SPEED DENSITY PACKAGE is 150$ (NEED LOCAL SUPPORT FOR THAT). IF you're not willing to go SD, Id still get an INTAKE PIPE to TURBO.. OTHERWISE Full 3" intake)
A spoolin-up COP would be the next non-OP relatod mod), closely followed by non-restricted 1pc clutch line, and 3port boost solenoid.
Then you gotta step up and start shaving rotating mass if you want more efficiency..
START in the following order:
APPROPRIATE TYRES (some lightweight 255/40 (semi)slicks)
wheels
2pc brake discs
(clutch) flywheel
aluminum driveshaft mod
suspension
chassis mods (FIRST STRIP HER, as far as you like her and only then start swapping stuff for lighter parts..

I am a fan of the BBK series turbos. The BBK turbos are built for the type of racing you do. I vote BBK Full, S2 cams with springs & retainers and a heavily ported stock exhaust manifold. With e85 you shouldn't have a problem hitting 450/400 on that setup...
BTW...car looks great...

hahah...umm yeah...thats a cluster fu*k of info...I wouldn't go with the EF3...That is probably too big of a turbo for the OP's needs...The BBK Full would out spool the hell out of the EF3...

Yes, THE EF3 WILL SPOOL SLOWER THAN A HKS7460, a bbk full and maybe the HTA green.

MAP promised the turbos will go BALL BEARING, so we all hope that they're upgradeable from the current journals... (im afraid they might not be)
If you're into the HKS turbo, which IS GREAT also, make sure you get a good deal (that means a set of thier NEW cams, and NOT MORE than 1750 total..) at this price range its a winner.. (coating and manifolds, 02 eliminator still needed here)

Damn you are all over MAP's nuts....How about we just wait and see how these 75 beta turbos, they will be sending out, perform before you start suggesting them to people....

How about you go give one of MAP's sales people a call and talk to them more about their products, since you seem to be an expert on them...

They just have some kickass products for the evo plaform, and this stuff looks really sweet...))

We both know he can reach over 450whp with the stock turbo, but its inconsistent and unreliable there... Its not like we're talking a 500rpm difference in spool up between the BBK FULL and EF3. I hope it will be pretty negligible.
