Tranny Suprise

Had tranny problems lastnight, unsure on issue..

I accelerated in 1st gear, went to grab 2nd and its like there wasnt anything there. No big bang or snap or anything. After slapping the shifter around some, 2nd gear was back. Went through the gears a gain and 2nd disapeared again. More slapping around of the shifter and 1st gear disapeared too. Now its not like its locking the shifter out, just that selecting 1st or 2nd gear feels the equivalent of selecting neutral. As far as I can tell, all the linkage is in place.

Anybody experience this or hace ideas on how much money Im about to blow.. Thanks

Seen this happen to a buddy of mine, but it was 3rd gear. It acted like it had no gear there, just would free rev even though it was in gear.
Ended up being a broken roll pin on the shift fork, so the shifter would still go into the 3rd gear slot, but the fork wasn't moving, only the shift rail would move.

well you need to go over the basics 1st. I would check the linkage, cables, and shifter bushings 1st before you tear the trans out. If you have to tear the trans out, the hardest part is pulling the trans and putting it back in. Tearing the trans apart is fairly easy to do, but if your going to go that far, you might as well freshin up the trans while you are there..
