Oil in number 4 exhaust port?

Today a buddy of mine and myself pulled the mani/turbo off to swap the turbo out on his 2003 evo 8. Because the car was smoking and had a slight miss. We get the mani off and soon relize that the number 4 exhaust port is covered in oil, But nothing past the mani is. There was a little oil in the intercooler piping. Any ideas? I suggested doing a compression test, and possibly the valve stem seals are shot? anyhelp would be appriciated

A leakdown test will tell you a lot more than a compression test, and isn't much harder to do.

When you say oil in intercooler pipe, which side are you talking about? Hot or cold?
How much oil is there? Is it actually COVERED?

There's some oil galleys on the 4G63T that run where the studs are, and need copper silicone. Or it could be your valve guides/seals unfortunately.

Leakdown test, report back.

I found the one oil galley in number 4 I believe. We swapped the turbo and o2 housing out, and the car smoked WORSE! I mean that sucker smoked the whole street out, At first it smelled like straight burnt oil, then the oil smell went away for the most part. You could smell It a little. Im leaning toward a blown head gasket? I do not have the tools to perform a leakdown test.

I had that problem and it was valve seals. But I could literally see the oil running down the valve just by looking into the exhaust port on the head.
