how bad is this turbo damage?

Looking for an answer to whether i need a rebuild
Comp cover snap ring popped off and the turbine rubbed up against the cover, so here is the resulting damage

I would have the turbo rebuilt. The people rebuilding the turbo can let you know if the rest of it is reusable or not. You definitely need a new compressor wheel but the comp housing should be ok.

Why not send it in to Forced Performance, or Blouch Turbo? I'll bet that you are looking at getting a new compressor wheel at least.

I will send you a compressor wheel for $20 plus shipping. If the damage was caused by the cover then the turbo will be as good as it was.

I made this exact mistake a few years back on a bran new turbo. Mine looked worse. I carefully filed away the raised edges on the blades. Ran the turbo for 10k. When I upgraded the turbo was still tight as new. sold to some guy in japan off ebay. never heard back from him.

In short its more a cosmetic issue than anything else. there will be no noticeable power loss either. Run it..

virtually every shop is going to charge 275 to install wheel. turbo has to come apart to balance wheels together. if turbo come apart is has to be rebuilt.

this totally untrue. A turbo coming apart does not damage it nor does it require a rebuild. It is common to replace parts with individually balanced wheels. That damaged wheel is no longer balanced and if you file it then you will be further off. I have swapped out damaged compressor and turbine wheels plenty of times with no adverse affects.

You might as well rebuild it, its never comforting to me to use even slightly damaged parts. Especially one of the most important parts.

The turbo needs to be balanced if swapping wheels and you need to figure that in your cost

if a compressor wheel blade decides to leave hello pistons & valves!

a lot of people get away with not balancing stuff......how lucky do you feel?
