Exedy twin plate hybrid clutch...

Exedy twin plate hybrid clutch...
I've been looking into the Exedy twin to triple conversion kit.
I didn't realise that it used a central floating spline hub, with 3x plates that slide on that hub.
With that in mind, whats stopping anyone using 2x clutch plates, and the hub to make a lighter weight twin plate clutch.
So you would use:
Exedy twin plate flywheel (reused)
2x triple plate clutch plates (DL03R $180 each)
1x spline hub (CH16 $165)
exedy middle floater plate (reused)
1x new top pressure plate (PP02 $155)
top clutch cover (reused)
This would be approx $680 USD for rebuild parts, plus machining costs for the flywheel and middle floater plate. And then a clutch shop to set it all up and get the post heights correct etc.
Has anyone looked into this?
Because the clutch discs are solid centre, they will be lighter weight than the sprung centre discs.
Just a thought
Cheers, Mike

Sounds cool, but what kind of benefits would you see? Extended life, holding more power, or free-er revving (i.e. the result of installing a lightweight flywheel)? I need to rebuild my clutch soon and I'm intrigued, but if it's gonna mess up my clutch then I'll just stick with a standard rebuild.
Also, it looks like exedy is bringing out some new products, I particularly noticed a few ads with a redesigned clutch cover in a few car magazines.

I dont know why you would want to do this?
completely void on these forums is how incredibly NOISY exedy triple clutches are. its the noisiest clutch for these cars bar none. and its because it has soo many loose floating connections.
reciprocating mass doubles with weight changes. and it quadruples with diameter changes. meaning weight changes near center of clutch has little effect on shift-abilty. only thing you gain with doing what you are describing is less wear on input splines. plus you would need a new mid plate for a twin since yours was thinned out tremendously to use the thicker discs you have currently. when switching from twin to triple the thick mid plate is eliminated and you ad in its place two thin mid plates and one more disc.

I'm still keen to try this.
I have an old Exedy twin plate here, ready for rebuild.
Does anyone have the weights of these clutch parts?
*exedy triple plate solid centre clutch plate
*exedy triple plate spline adapter
*exedy twin plate sprung centre clutch plate
*new 8 Leg quartermaster 2x disc plus joined hub
The goal is to make something that shifts amazingly, using two plates.
Cheers, Mike
