Burning Oil- catch can install help
I hope this is the right section for my questions.
I bought an 05 Evo that is burning some oil. I have to add some every week(half a quart maybe). I read on here for a while and I figured I should try adding a catch can and see if that helps at all. I have a greddy catch can in the garage so I want to install it.
On some of the threads here people are installing them by connecting to the PCV and intake while others are installing it between the breather hose on the right side of the valve cover and the intake.
Which one is better(which will help more with oil consumption). Are there any other tricks that might help with this issue? The car does not smoke, runs fine.

well first off you sure its not leaking any oil? Does it run good, if u add oil half a quart a week either its runnin like crap or its leaking out. As far as your second question goes yours isnt a dual stage style oil catch can, therefore if you try and put that on the fitting on the back of the valve cover and remove your pcv, your going to pressure that thing and eventually blow it up haha, therefore it goes on the back of valve cover off the nipple next to cam sensor, route one line to it, and other line to intake tube, thats how my cusco oil catch can is setup, just make sure some catch cans specify which side needs to be for what...

Best bet is a Saikou Michi twin setup, they just plain work. If all you can do is a single go between the PCV and intake manifold but you're not going to reduce oil burning. The whole idea of a catchbcan is to keep the oil out of the intake so you can remove it later through a drain.

Dude your saying i dont know what im talking about? your talkin about having him put a single catch can in between pcv and intake mani...thats not what your supposed to do. Reason being the vapors going through pcv close as you transition into boost, therefore the only crankcase pressure vapors go out the valve cover by the cam sensor when your in boost, thats when you wanna control vapors because they have a lot more pressure coming out the valve cover in boost then just normal driving. Sure the saikou michi is a good catch can, but honestly ive had my cusco setup the way I just said 2 years its been on and ive cleaned it out on the inside once, and it didnt even register on the tube on the outside. Well I said that earlier cfd because ive seen some people do that. Thus y said not to do it.

in 2 years its never accumulated oil vapors to where it registers on my catch can, yup i just cleaned it because after two years figured it would be dirty n need cleaning, nope...so a catch can should help, unless either a your turbo is leaking oil, or you maybe have an engine issue, best bet is first diagnose an oil leak if there is one, like i said if not take off your turbo inlet pipe and check for oil in it, you can always remove downpipe and check hotside... good luck man

dual can is the best setup period. regardless pcv or not you still need a check valve in line so you dont pressurize the catch can that runs between the intake manifold and valve cover.
the outlet on the valve cover to air intake side is designed so the turbo vacuum helps relief crankcase pressure.. thats the factory setup, thats how my personal car is setup and its relieved ALL crank case pressure ive had.. granted i had to drill a huge hole out to help further accelerate the removal of the crankcase pressure since im way beyond stock and have a built engine etc with looser tolerances so the engine can produce high hp and not wear itself down..

you should do a compression test and a leakdown test and that will give you the status on the engines health.. based on the fact its burning 1/2 quart of oil consistently and if its not that modded is a good sign its not healthy.
possibly the pcv needs replaced? next time you go full throttle, look behind you for some smoke.. if you have it, replace the pcv .. if it doesnt cure it, then chances are the turbo is burning oil.

I bought the car a few months ago. It is all stock and the couple I brought it from said they bought it stock. I need to get it tuned because there is some black smoke when I go WOT so I figured its runnnig rich.

Pull off the piping at the TB and take a look inside your intake manifold. It's probably covered in oil. Until you remove the hose for pressure relief from the head to the intake side you will always have oil in your intake.

why wouldn't you want to "pressurize the catch can"? Buy a good one and it won't bother it a bit.

... it would pressurize your can and your crankcase and not hold boost. A good can will easily hold up to and more than 50-PSI. There is no need to add a check valve the PCV is a check valve and absolutely no need or reason to remove your the PCV.
