Opinions on CP Pistons?
I am looking at building my IX motor. Anyone have any opinions on CP pistons? I am going to be doing a 2.3 with 4g64 crank. I have not decided on rods yet.
I plan on doing the occasional road racing event, couple lapping days and year, maybe a drag race or two. Probably only 2-3k miles per year.
Any opinions welcome!!!
Thank you.

I had a set....never installed them because i bought a 85mm set and i ended up boring up my cylinders. Anyway, from what i hear they're a good piston. Lots of people have ran them and had great success.

^^ you can read this over and make up your own mind, I took it with a grain of salt....but it never hurts to be informed.

I'd spend your money on something else. CP is the the last piston in the world I'd run.
JE FSR design is something good and worth the money.
Still couldn't pay me to run them.

I have used Cp pistons on all my engines for years and never had a problem,
Poor machining and poor biulds are most of the problems with any pistons.

If you read it closer he says when he finished installing the pistons he tuned the motor, then a couple paragraphs down he states the tune remained the same for both sets of pistons. Now with the ross pistons being 8 and the cp being 9:0 compression if he used the same tune that's asking for something like that to happen. And by looking at his pics although hard to tell from being blurry the cp pistons look pockmarked which is usually signs of detonation that he claims to have not had.

You sound very ignorant! I'm running CP high compression 10:1 pistons on my car.

I have a CBRD 2.0 that is 2 months old, CP pistons were used.

I'd go with the JE asymmetrical pistons. For the 2.3L stroked with an 85.50mm bore (.50mm over) they only weigh 272 grams and also have a shorter 2.250" long wrist pin that will save you another 10+ grams over the CP round design. They are a new design that AMS and and I believe Buschur have been using. More info here:

Chad is currently completing my build 100 mm winberg crank Carrillo h beam pro rods and.... 10.1 cp pistons. Nothing cheap there so why would i skimp?

we have 2 other motors in the shop with CP's- another is a manley 100mm stroker crank with CP side coated-
doing a 94mm/156rod/CP/carillo setup shortly-
everyone will have their own opinion on pistons- we've never had an issue with CP-
we've used Mahle, CP, Wiseco-
going to be playing with omega shortly-

I have CP pistons in a normally aspirated race car. They are absolutely gorgeously made and they work flawlessly. I had issues with JE before. However, it wasn't a manufacturer issue, though JE was not very pleasant in dealing with the issue.
What matters more than the piston manufacturer is the spec of the piston by the engine builder. Buy a piston that is spec'd by a reputable engine builder.

CP Pistons is one of the top piston manfacturers in the USA. Justincase above has the best rotating assembly money can buy and leaving the assembly up to Chad = one bullet proof short block.
Do yourself a favor, call CP, Wiseco, JE, Arias, Ross. Tell them you want to make a custom piston. See which one of them is willing to do so and which one of them asks the most questions about the bore, stroke, deck height, head gasket, bowl chamber cc etc...
