Wow, yes axle grease is black and some are green/yellowish. But after so many miles and with the axle being close it heat, it will eventually turn green and milky like texture. That's why its always recommended to rebuild your axles with new boots and greese. But not everybody does it because I don't either lol. Only until the boots rips or clamp breaks.

Yeah, you definitely need to get the car up for a through examination. If it is axle boot grease the boot will throw it in a radial pattern in line with the boot. This should be easy to spot if that is what is going on.

I live in a town that is a trucking center - lots of tractor-trailer rigs on the roads. They grease trucks with this same looking yellow grease and the trucks will throw it onto the roadway in big globs. I've had to clean it off of my car on numerous occasions.

Misunderstanding buddy . Go to the auto parts store and you will see that they sell Black grease. Not everyone uses oem stuff now days. Oem yes they are yellowish/ green as most oem are. My brother and i replaced all boots, clamps, and grease in his nsx. Yes the oem comes in that color. The average autozone, carquest and so on comes in black.

This is what you get at autozone!

most likely he has the stock axles and boots on and never changed them. 99% of the community probably never changed their axle boots. most people will buy a new axle before replacing the boot & grease..

i use nothing but oem for the axle stuff.. the only thing aftermarket i use on those are high end band-it band clamps.. far superior to oem clamps. the autozone boots suck compared to oem boots. you will be changing those again eventually.

I have a brand new OEM mitsubishi drive shaft here, i have taken the inner boot off and the grease is.......black. The ones i've changed its always been black as its Lith-Moly based.

That stuff in the picture is mayo - ie oil and water mixed. It may have come out the dip stick tube or a breather hose where it is more likely water vapour and oil vapour will collect.

Any kind of black oil/grease can lighten up and look like that when it gets mixed with water and exposed to the atmosphere for awhile. That's clearly what it is, you just have to track down what's leaking! You could try cleaning it off and seeing how fast it comes back, and if you can see any sort of pattern where it comes from.

best post.

op - check the axle boots, although i suspect there would be a pretty obvious spray pattern if from a cv joint or any other source. alternately, who works on your evo? is there a chance they accidentally smeared something.

I just got my car back from a local performance shop about a week ago and it DEFINITELY didn't have this problem when I dropped it off. I would take it back to them for them to figure out the problem but they are always so slammed they would probably take a week just to get it on a lift to check it out.

So far this is what info I have just for updating purposes:

-I checked the axle boot and the rack and pinion boot on the passenger side but didn't see and rips or tears.

- I also checked out the cv boot clips to make sure one wasn't loose and they seem to be on tight.

-The oil on my dipstick looks fresh with no signs of contamination from water or coolant

-My oil level hasn't dropped at all (still at the MAX mark on dipstick)

I will try and take a picture of the splatter so you guys can see exactly where it is. I will post it up asap.

drive shaft?????? the proper word is axle shaft per mitsubishi ASA parts indicator.

and the grease is not black on both sides.. order the boot kit once yourself and you will see. it comes in the same clear bottle with red cap.. im going to take a picture just to show proof.
