BUTTER in my engine bay? ? ? please help

the one color is closer to a black but when you put it on your hand it is a oily clear residue.. but when packed together it looks very dark (blackish). so sure the one is black, the other is far from it tho..

Thanks for the advice man. I cleaned everything up this morning then drove for about 20 miles and it's still clean. This leads me to believe that it definitely was a rip in one of the boots (either the axle or the rack and pinion). I guess all of it is out so no more is flinging out. I still don't know which one it is because I have ran my fingers through every groove on each both boots and I didn't feel any rips or tears.

All the splatter was right in line with the boot. The axle will fling it out in a straight line at right angles to the boot and there will be lots of it. Also the boot was gooey with grease. So, if this is occurring, it is child simple to see.

stop driving on it!!!! if it is really the axle grease you will destroy your bearings if you continue driving on it. if its a tear you're not gonna see it until you get under the car and thoroughly inspect it.

Yeah I checked all of the boots. I'm actually thinking that maybe it was just some grease or oil that got on the boots when the shop was changing out my tcase and when the grease got mixed with water from driving in the rain it might have changed to that color like one of the other guys on here said.

No sorry I dont have any pictures. The second test will be today. I have to run a couple of errands close to my house so I will keep checking it everywhere I stop and see if more goo is in the engine bay. If it isn't then I guess I will go from there to look for other possible causes or maybe it was just a freak occurrence.

I had this "butter" colored stuff sprayed on my firewall and under my car from the axle not being seated all the way in the transmission. gear fluid all over the place coming out of the output shaft. Mine was on the drivers side. knocked it back in with a rubber mallet and no more goo. check to see if there is a gape where it is seated on the passenger side. hope this helps. good luck.

I actually noticed some play in the pass side axle. I can move it a little bit side to side so that could be it. I pushed it in as much as I could into the tcase and maybe that's what stopped the leak.

if yes to the first thing i wrote, then top off the tcase again.. there should be enough fluid in the tcase that it spills over the fill cap.. dont worry about overfilling it, it will come out the drive shaft end if its overfilled.. plus the tcase and trans both have pressure reliefs / drains incase people do overfill them.
did the stuff smell really bad? another thing you can do is buy some of the gear oil and compare the smell to what you had on your hand to get an idea what it is. gear oil has a horrible odor.
