I know the cause has been identified as in the fuel itself pretty much but would you mind me asking the differences in your cars fuel systems? ie hose types and the like.

On my 91 Galant I was running FIC 2150cc injectors and I had the build up. I got my E85 from the same place as always.

If you want an AEM 4 channel wideband with 4 sensors i have one i might sell you.....

I know exactly how it is to deal with David when you have a problem. He's not really a easy to deal with kinda guy and he hates talking on the phone.. He's best suited to what he does, making parts. Glad to see you got it sorted out Mellon. $hit happens and people make mistakes, Thats just how it is...

I have been on the fence about converting my Evo (X needs kit because the OE fuel lines suck) to run E85 for a year. I have the injector headroom. But I live in Tennessee, too. This thread has pretty much cured me of wanting it. 93 for this guy.
I think it really just depends on the individual stations. When I was at Ft. Campbell I bought E85 at a few different places around Hoptown/Clarksville/Nashville without issue.

Though, I would occasionally switch back to 93 when I was making a long trip somewhere, maybe that managed to keep it cleaned out.

Maybe there should be a "E85 gunk thread", where people can list if they have gunk or not, what injectors they have, where there located, etc, so we can get data on this issue and maybe figure out ideas to fix it, pin point gas stations that sell the "gunk" E85, etc.

I can say the e85 in my area never gave me any gunk. I swapped injectors several times over the years and never had a problem. I got e98 from david buschur and cut it down with some of their local pump gas to make e85. I doubt the problem was there. I ended up getting e85 from 3-4 other locations on the 700 mile trip home. When I got home I was out so I filled up with 10 gallons I put in some spare gas cans on the way home.

so who knows which place it came from unfortunately.

This thread is loaded with awesome info ^ Thiazole is a chemist and goes into some excellent detail trying to determine the how, why, and what of the injector gunk.

So did the car idle differently than normal with all the gunk buildup? Needless to say I will be switching back and forth to my e85/93 tune more often to avoid this buildup. I only use 93 when I cant locate a station nearby with e85. Maybe ill do a 3/1 regiment going forward.

What causes the gunk, H2O in the fuel?

Everyone interested in this topic, should read the above linked thread and the results Thiazole, the chemist, found.

So the conclusion was a petroleum based substance (large molecule) that was possibly from old diesel tank then suggestion to add a small amount of race gas. So wouldn't adding a small amount of race gas to the e85 prevent the build up.

Thiazole commented that he expected that race gas would break down the gunk better than regular gas would, he even touched on a few points that he thinks it is the gas which is carrying/causing the gunk (due to the left over crap from the diesel fuel/now E85 tanks) and not the ethanol itself.

well, the only way to run e85 and be certain it doesn't have the concentration of the gunk is to have some type of gunk dissolver like ketones, and ethers dilute the e85 first. IF you can dilute the e85 with the right quantity it should allow for the gunk to dissolve. The problem is there is no way to 100 percent know how much is the right quantity for this and you'd be experimenting with possibly kabooming the engine with detonation in a cylinder like Mellon experienced. It will improve the condition but might have minor gunk build up instead of major which might still kaboom the engine. It's still risky. Be like Buschur and run e898 to be sure or race fuel. Either way it'd add a lot of cost to dilute since acetone is not cheap about 17 dollars a gallon and you'd easily go through that again and again.
