Redline 75w85 gl5

Just thought I'd put it out there. Had to replace a seal on my tc so the tranny was drained before I removed it. Was going to run the redline mix of mt-90 And mtf mix but found that Redline now sold a 75w85 transmission fluid! Perfect. Well, the fluid did not come close to oem. Notchy, impossible shifting when cold, grinding. Went back to diaqueen and things have gone back to normal. In a pinch I would use it if I had to but I wouldn't recommend this fluid to anyone.

this one works well in manual transmissions. it doesnt have friction modifiers so syncros can grab better.

Probably should of mentioned I have a six speed transmission. That's why I was attracted to the 75w85. I tried the 75w90 a long time ago with similar results.

Just as a note, for evos with the 5 speed you want a GL4 fluid.

It looks like you are confusing which Red Line fluids you should be using here.

The 75W85 GL5 Gear Oil is for differentials NOT transmissions. Red Line states this specifically on their product web page.

The MT85 (75W85 GL-4 Gear Oil) is for transmissions and is what you should have used in place of the oem Diaqueen fluid. I'm running this fluid at the moment and have mixed feelings about it so far. I think the fluid that the mil.spec guys were able to source previously had smoother shift feel. The MT85 is the only direct replacement fluid I know of available for us 6 speed owners.

Hopefully your thread title was just a typo and you were not running the GL5 differential oil in your transmission. The MT85 GL4 is what you should have using.

Anything GL-5 in your transmission will destroy it, don't ask me why.

It stated suitable for gearbox applications?!? Well, glad I am back with the diaqueen fluid. Hopefully this will be a reference for anyone who might make the same mistake.

probably for domestic vehicles. Remember though, it didnt say it was specifically for EVO gearbox applications. Use what the owners manual recommends or search on here to see what GL4 fluid guys are having good results with.

The tin of diaqueen doesn't say it's "specifically" for use in evo's. It says designed for use in Mitsubishi AUTOMATIC transmissions. I know what the owners manual states as well, 75w85 gl4 or exact equivalent. That fluid is pretty much the holy grail of fluids in terms of availability. As for gl-5 vs. gl-4 oils the main difference as I understand it is that gl-5 has an additional impact resistant additive. There has also been an old wives tale circulated about gl-5's corroding the yellow metal elements inside our transmissions which I could provide a plethora of links to the contrary but I have been trying to not get into that debate. I am sure both oils have anti corrosive properties. The redline ns product stated above is a gl-5 fluid and Amsoil doesn't recommend a fluid for the six speed transmission. The mt85 is a redline product I wasn't aware of and wasn't available at time of purchase but is indeed an exact equivalent and even he says he has mixed feelings about it. I have just been trying to inform anyone that might come across and think about using, Redline 75w85 gear oil about my experience with it. Gl-5 or not.

Oh yeah, the bottle says not for use in "most" manual transmissions. It does not state not for use in any transmissions. I wouldn't of bought it if it stated as such.

generally you are right, but a few gl5 oils have proven to be fine on brass and bronze. redline is one of them.
