blown turbo?

I need your guy's opinion on this one, since i cant find anything concrete by myself :/

My friend just bought and evo, came with some mods including an FP red, everything was running fine, and strong, until yesterday, he came by my house and showed me how his evo blew white smoke, (burned smell, disguting), but it ONLY happend when going 5psi+ , it DOESNT smoke on idle, or normal driving, but when going WOT, its a full white curtain of smoke.

We replace de DV, and check for shaft play that result in none, theres NO weird noises coming from the turbo, no pinch hoses... but there was a little of oil on the compressor's housing when taking the intake off and at the bottom of the turbo too right in the middle..

what do u guys think?

Try flooring it and getting into boost then letting foot out of the throttle completely. If you see smoke(white me thinks) in the rear view upon lifting off the throttle it is most likely turbo bearings and seals time.

Back and forth shaft play is a good indicator that turbo is blown as well . Besides the turbo it might be other things such as PCV or some such.

A little oil in the turbo inlet is normal and it comes from the valve cover
The white smoke at WOT on boost... my money is on the head gasket.

we check compression and it good on all 4 cylinders, and at idle and driving under low boost theres no smoke, it only comes while boosting more than 5psi, and when deceleratingthe some stops, and it has a nasty smell

It is most likely coolant getting past somewhere. The turbo is fine. The turbo doesn't blow white smoke, as if the turbo were blown, it would be blueish in color. Some times you can have a minor hg problem that may not pass coolant till you start getting into boost because that is when you start increasing cylinder pressure. Does the car have ARP head studs? If it doesn't, I would bet HG. What is peak boost? Also if it does have arp head studs go back through the head and make sure they are at 100-105 ft lbs.

So, if white smoke indicates coolant issue, then blue smoke indicates turbo seals/bearings. Right Mikey?

Op, you can check your oil/coolant for contamination. If you are pushing coolant chances are they are mixing.

White smoke = Coolant...... Blue = Oil..... Black = Fuel
The nasty smell you're getting, does it smell like coolant at all?
I'm guessing the head gasket too.

guys we replace my friend FP RED with mine and BAM! no smoke when boosting, I can say there was an EXCESSIVE! oil on intercooler and the pipes, the turbine was good and NO shaft play it actually look rlly clean, after we install my FP red everything on his car when back to normal so he ended up buying it from me. How can I check it the turbo seal are good? or best bet could be send it to FP?

If there is zero shaft play the 95% of the time the seals are usually fine. Now if you have to much oil volume/pressure you can push oil put the seals. You would have oil in the compressor also if this is the case. Shouldt be replying and driving. Lol talk to you guys later

Yea, but burning white smoke? Maybe an internal crack of the CHRA? I know that sounds far fetched, but it could happen I guess.

yea we think its something wrong with the ventilation, cause I can say we took about 1/2 qt of oil from the intercooler itself!! ima try the turbo in my car see how it goes!
