There's a tool you can rent at autozone, called a pilot bearing removal tool. It hooks in behind the little spacer and then attaches to a slide hammer. It made it about a 30 second thing. It's also free if you return it.

What about if you have the 4g64 belt which is 1 tooth longer? Should the stock gears line up providing the head has not been decked? This is non-mivec i'm inquiring about

+1. I have a 4g64 Belt from a DOHC Galant that I'll be using. If the second post is correct, we would have to advance the gears 3.75*.

I put the spacer in a vise and pull the crank off of it.

I have my exhaust cam gear advanced about 2.5* but I have the stock gear on the intake. Wonder if it might be out. The intake had look ok to me but I might be wrong. Ill look into this some more. Maybe robbing myself of some spool and power

I'm hoping Aaron can shed some light on this as well. I bought the 64 belt just because it was specific to the motor (longer) and I'll need a full 60K out of each belt, as the car is my DD and makes about a dozen 1200 mile round trips from Philly to Indiana a year.

So far, the car has yet to successfully make one of them, hence my complete overhaul .

the longer belt should make it easier to get on, but as far as where to line up the marks, it shouldnt matter. belt pitch, not length is what matters. the belt could be 20' long and still keep things in time.

Oh, I know, but because it's longer it obviously has a different number of teeth, and to line it up properly with the cam gears I thought they needed to be degreed differently.

(Not disagreeing by any means. Just trying to filter through all of the sh*t I've been told).

The 64 belt has 1 tooth more than the 63. Pitch is the same

i dont think thats true, it should be lined up the same regardless of the length.

Definitely see your point. I'm wondering why some say it's different. I'm confuddled.

I have seen a different way of people doing it using the oem mivec line. Does MAP sell the litle piece that screws into the block? It looks really simple to make. Maybe ill attempt to make my own. Shouldn't be that hard.
