You could also use a I-beam that doesn't require notching if you were worried about it at all. Manley's Stroker rod will clear without a problem as its more X-mas tree shaped than straight. Also MAP/Howards I-beams clear pretty well too.
As far as cleaning up the block, it won't be an issue at all. Just let him know that he has 0.3-(mm) to work with. Or if you need standard units .011-".
