Of course it's possible silly! Both turbos are configured with the same, identical compressor wheel.

The only significant difference between the two turbos that you mention is that the IX turbo has a larger, more efficient compressor housing. The center sections are the same. The turbine wheels are the same. The turbine housings are both identical 10.5cm pieces. Oh yeah, there is a minor difference with respect to backing plates and diffusers on the compressor side.

i agree it makes sense then, i had bought an 8 turbo from a guy who told me that it had the 9 wheel put into it with the 10.5 hotside...does this all sound normal, only reason i ask is, if u look at the turbos side by side there is a huge difference

Yeah that would be an awesome idea. Remove a compressor wheel that has been dynamically balanced at 30,000rpms to the turbine wheel and shaft it came off of and swap in the same part number wheel from another turbo so that your turbo is no longer balanced and flows the same or less than you started with.

You fail to listen to the responses that already gave you the answer that you should have understood

Sparky already adequately answered your question

The centre sections are not the same.
Evo 4-8 are the same, evo 9 is different.
The bearings and internal components are the same.
As you mentioned the compressor cover and the backing plate is different, but the backing plate is part of the centre core
