Evo 8 no spark

Alright, I've done quite a bit of research and still have no luck with my problem.

The car is a 2003 Evo 8 with no major modifications. My brother was driving the car on dirt road (not driving crazy), then the car randomly died and wouldn't start. We towed it home and haven't been able to start it since.

The only problem I can see so far is that it has no spark. I checked the voltages going to the coil packs and the power wire has 12v, but the signal wire has nothing when I crank the car over.

I put my cam angle sensor and coil packs in my other evo 8 and the car started so I was able to rule those out. I was thinking it might be my ecu, so I also put it in my other car and disabled the immobilizer with ecuflash and it wouldn't start the car. I got a new ecu, disabled the immobilizer and it started my working car. Tried it in the other one and still no luck.

I've heard if it's the crank angle sensor, the fuel pump wont work, so I disconnected the feed line and had plenty of pressure.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I would venture to say crank angle sensor.

You will still build fuel pressure at the rail, however, the injectors won't fire.

Are your plugs wet with fuel? If not, crank angle would be the next place I'd look.

Alright, i'm leaning to the crank sensor now. I checked the plugs and there appeared to be no fuel on them and they had no smell. I checked the voltage on the signal wire while cranking to be sure and it had nothing as well.
With no spark and no fuel from the injectors, it seems that the crank position sensor might be the culprit.
Although one other thing is keeping me thinking otherwise.
I can't connect to my ecu through the obdII port with my evoscan gps unit, nor with my laptop.
When I try to check the trouble codes, it tries to connect and says:
"FTDI device found but unable to to purge (1)."

Could I have bad wiring? Is there a fuse or relay that could be causing this?
I know it's not the ecu, I was able to plug the ecu into my other evo and connect to it no problem.

Check all of your fuses first before you rip the lower timing cover off. BTW, that will be a blast.

yikes. that doesn't sound like a fun undertaking. i was hoping the lower timing cover wasn't that big of a deal to remove

Ya, I've checked the fuses 5 times over again just to make sure. Unfortunately I'll removing the timing belt covers I guess. I'll post up progress and if this solves my problem.

Sounds good man.

Tip:

You need to put a jack under the motor, take out the passenger motor mount, and slowly drop the motor down until you can get to your idler pulley. It makes the job 20x easier.

I had a feeling that's what I would need to do since I've had to do that on a couple of my old eclipses.
Good advice to put out here though, thank you

Ever check the male/female pins on the harness, they might of pushed away.... Remember plastic over time become a bit brittle.

I briefly looked at them and tried wiggling them to make sure they dont seem loose. Didn't find anything noticeable. Any better method for checking the harness? Thanks

I would thoroughly check all fuses first. Ive seen this exact problem and it was the result of a fuse

Alright, I got the car running. Turns out it was the crank position sensor. The balance shaft belt broke and completely shredded and a piece of it must have got sucked into the sensor and broke it. I ended up replacing the balance shaft belt, timing belt, and the crank position sensor and the car started right up.
Here's a pic of the old and new sensors.

For anyone else who thinks they might have the same problem, here's three things to look for that I learned from other users:
1- No spark (To be sure, I checked voltage from the signal wire and found nothing)
2- No fuel from injectors (Will have pressure to rail, but nothing out of injectors. I checked voltage from the signal wire and had nothing)
3- RPM doesn't jump, just stays at zero when cranking the motor over.

Thanks to everyone on here who helped me.
