4G64 block into an EVO??????

I was wondering, how many people out there have converted there EVO into a 2.4ltr monster using the 4G64 block (as used in the American Galants from 1999)? It seems a good idea as the 64 is 6mm taller, (and therefore puts the piston pin in a more conventional position) and is cheaper. I ask because it seems that some people over here in the UK think it can be done (with the later 4G64 block, they recon the EVO 4-8 head will bolt straight on!), and say in some people over here have tried it. If so, any info that you could give would be great, as there are many people back in the UK wanting answers to this question!

Thanks Chris

4g64 block into an Evo

Complete 4g64 engines are dirt cheap here in the US - like $200 This swap should become very popular with our Evo8. I believe several are working on the swap at this time. Don't know of any who have completed it yet though. Should be a practical way to get around the high cost of custom stroker kits. Magnusmotorsports has done lots of these on DSMs - also there is a great (long-335 posts) thread in DSMtalk.com in the advanced DSM technical discussion section on this subject, mostly as it relates to DSMs.
It would be great to get some discussion going here on this topic!

The 4g64 swap would be fairly easy, the mirage guys have already done it in the mirageforums, and the lancer would be even easier. The 63 head should bolt right up evo 4-8, there is a guy named LB on the mirage forum that went from a 4g15 to the 4g64 and he used 4g93 parts, considering the lancer is a 4g94, it should be just as easy, possibly easier. The outlander 4g64, would be best, due to the lancer and outlander sharing the same chasis, but the 2000 eclipse would be next, and then the galant.

Sweet. Thanks mate!

I think it’s the cost thing that’s driving the UK boys when it comes to the strokers. I mean for the Jun 2.2ltr kit (fitted) you’re looking at around £10,000 ($17,000!!!!). That’s far too much. There are guys in the UK that are running BIG power and torque from strokers (and I would love to use one), and they give you a much more flexible car as well! If someone (either in the US or the UK) could come up with a complete kit to convert the 4G64 for the EVO then I defiantly think they would be a huge market on both sides of the pond! Let’s only hope.

PS any link to that thread I can’t find it (me being a dumb ***)?

Calm down. He lives in the UK. He's off by a tenth of a litre, it's no reason to jump down his throat.

Actually, it IS a 2.2l.

I was going to do it with a company here in Mi. They said for a complete engine with turbo (everything) $7000! Thats not install of course, but find some one to do it and it would be awesome. I'm going to do it when ever I blow my current motor up. They estimated like 700hp!!!

It seems that with the potential to get a block/crank from a junk yard for perhaps as low as $200 that building a 4g64 for the Evo would be way, way cheaper than the Tomei/Toda/Jun alternatives. All you need for the short block is a cleanup bore/hone and deck job, good rods and pistons and you have an arguably superior street platform for relatively low cost. This merits serious consideration as a side project!

Now you just have to fine a block that works. The EVO transmission is much different then the DSM. So you will need to fine a block that has the same bolt pattern.

Why would the 4G64 from a newer galant or 3G eclipse not work?
I know somebody with a Evo IV 4G63 in a newer Galant using stock galant transmission.

From what I understand the block from a 1999-2003 Galant will work as well as Chrysler Sebring 2.4L and Spyder, etc. There may be some other applications that also work, I'm not sure. You can buy a complete SOHC Galant engine (1999-2003) for as low as $250 (plus shipping) on E-Bay!
