HELP evo 8 keeps dying on me.

So i need some help was driving last night and the car died but then I found that my cold pipe had come off put it back on and it drove fine boost and all. Did give me quite a scare.

So today I was driving and wasnt even boosting and the car lost all power like when the cold pipe came off and I pulled off turned the engine off and parked it and thought it would be the same joint but it wasnt everything was perfectly fine with the turbo hotside and cold side.

The car has no mods except a turbo back exhaust and still on stock cat. It does have an autozone cone on the intake. I did not do that its how I got the car when it came. The car is around 93000 and is and evo 8 year 2003 if that madders.

I feel it could be the fuel pump is giving out? I didnt hear a whine when I bought the car but now Im hearing it. I did just change the sparkplugs as well had autolites plat tips and I went NGK on it and its ran a lot better since. The old sparkplugs did have signs of lean. The motor is good I have just got done with compression check and it was 149/150/148/150 and leak down was good as well. I looked into it and the car doesnt come with a fuel filter? Its part of the pump? I called autozone and thats what I was told however I know they arnt experts at cars so I figured Id ask.

Also wanted to note that it did not overheat. The engine was at maybe 1/4 of the way up when it lost its power and powered down.

Thanks guys for your help I really hope its something less serious.

Any check code?
And looking around is not a good leak test. Build you a cheap tester.
What is your car doing now when you go to crank it? If it's not starting up see which part is missing. Fuel or Spark?

no codes thats just it is there are none. Thats whats making this rather diffcult that said I have not done a full boost leak test no but its starts up fine now but its if you shift early the car feels like it loses more then normal power and then it idels a bit and then the car shuts is self off

is there a fuel filter? or is this just the time to go 255

Is there a wideband in the car? If you think its a fuel issue, that would tell you pretty fast.

Does the car idle/stay on if you give it a little gas? Or does it want to die regardless? I ask because I had my IAC go out on me more than once....and it would not idle at all and die on its face....but I could drive the car just fine until I had to stop at a light, or stop sign or any time I had my foot off the accelerator.

I had to replace my IAC. Not sure what year your 8 is but my 2003 8 has the IAC with the small plastic type teeth at the tip that wear down and ultimately fail.

In my case, it was an easy fix with only a phillips head screwdriver and a used IAC I found on this forum for around $80.

This was my issue...not saying it is yours...Just something to consider.

I read somewhere you can test your IAC somehow but I don't know how to do that.

I did see an IAC for sale here just the other day.

Good Luck!

I don't know how to check it....

If you need to replace it....get one that has the spring on the outside...it is a newer design and last longer.

#2 & #3 is what you want....#4 is what you have. (not my photo)

Winkydog.... These IACs are sold separately. They are NOT a part of ANY kit that I am aware of.

If you are upgrading your fuel pump to a 255, whomever you purchase it from should sell you the parts needed to do the install.

Yes, the pic I posted shows you the two different style IACs in our evos....2 & 3 are the same and the style you want...4 is what what came in our year evos and avoid if possible. 1 is some other component I am not familiar with and not part of this discussion.

Hope that helps ya out.

255

hey Im gunna go with 255 first only cause Its making a squeeling noise and frankly its hearable and my friends got a 255 you cant hear but mines making noise. If that doesnt cure it Ill look into the IAC i have heard the 03 have problem ones. God I wish this car would throw a code so it can point me in the right direction.

That said from what ive searched the 255 should be fine without a tune as far as fuel pressure and safety. Just wanted to know if it will hold up to mildly aggressive driving without a tune? It would be about a month or 2 months before I get all the parts needed for a tune.

You're not changing anything on the motor , just the way your fuel is supplied so if the tune you had worked, it will continue to work. Curious what your outcome was. The fuel pump fix your issue?
