Transmission removal

Has anyone ever attempted to remove their transmission in their backyard/driveway without the use of lift of any kind, just basically putting the car on jack stands? Is this even possible? It is not my first option, but it is an option none the less. Any advice or input on this would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Yes, it is possible. It'll be much easier with a lift obviously, but definitely doable. Make sure you have all the right tools, etc. Good luck.

Done this atleast 5 times now, a couple awd DSM's and a WRX. A transmission jack makes it a lot easier.

A lift is the way to go, but most don't have access. I have taken the trans out, 6speed, several times. They go out the bottom relatively easy, its just the prep bits that are a pain to keep organized. sandwich baggies with labels are your friend when you are re-installing. Group all the nuts bolts and washers, you will be glad you did.

Most of the time wasted during re install is figuring out which bolt goes where in the bellhosing, or which 10mm connects which wiring loom bracket.

You can do multiple regular jacks too if you don't have a trans jack. That is how I did it, but I did make a craptacular cradle to balance the trans more or less. However brute force works better. So having a couple of friends underneath and one above is fastest. The thing weighs about 150 (or less for 5 speed). Just make sure your friends can bench press half that.

When you say backyard, make sure its on concrete or solid surface if that isn't obvious.

make sure you have very tall jack stands and a small tranny jack, it'll make things 1000x's easier, i've done a few that way and its not to bad, if its your first time it'll take awhile

I have done this a couple times. I used a car jack for the transmission.

I did my clutch without a lift. Was hoping to get it done in a weekend but that didn't happen lol. Couldn't get the wave clip off the TOB. I lost motivation and didn't work on it for a week or so. It's a lot of work

did my clutch a week or so ago on jackstands. The tranny only wieghs 150 lbs and It doesn't come out straight or easily. At least for me. So I couldn't really use a transmission jack. Not that hard to bench 150 if your under it. If you google it you will find a super detailed helpful write up from another site.

ya that clip can be a pain, especially from underneath.

but other than that the transmission comes out pretty easily

I think that is kind of the online bible for evo clutch jobs.

I found the boosted films stuff really helpful too. Check out that site for the TC case removal.

This is the guide I always use.

Any estimate on the time I should set aside to do this? 6 hours? one day? two days? I have helped remove transmissions before, and that only took an hour or 2 with a lift, but I have never done it with this car, so I am just wondering if I should take a few days off work to do it, haha
