Relocated oil cooler / upgraded cooler + lines

Hi all-

I need some help thinking around a problem. I am interestd in relocating my oil cooler up away from the bottom right of the car and into behind the grill area (Evo 9). I was thinking about the extra lines being added and the possible adverse effect on oil pressure.

I know I have seen this setup before on an Evo, but I wanted to hear some opinions as to the effect of the extra length of lines on the pressure provided.

As a caveat- the car I bought never came with any cooler at all. I am upgrading to a 19 row unit and it is flanged with 10 AN lines. These lines are larger as well, further effecting the oil pressure.

Any data or solid opinions on whether there is any risk here?

The car is a bolt-on Evo 9 that will see mostly street, and the occasional HPDE (thus the want of upgraded cooler).

Pressure drop has to do with the resistance to flow and the amount of flow through the lines. This is a function of the pump output, rpm and the overall oil resistance loop.

To put it simply (dumbly) just use a little larger line than stock and you should have less pressure loss through the oil cooler system despite a longer line.

As long as your compensating for the greater volume desire I thing you'd be fine. As far as pressure you said the hoses are larger ( than stock I assume). I don't see any issues. Could be wrong though.

But why would you move your oil cooler anyways( i am just asking) the stock location is very effective because it gets direct air flow from the bumper. Just put an after market oil cooler kit, there are many vendors that sell complete kits with line to make it easy install.I bought the oil cooler from MAP Performance and its a Great kit and it came with everything.

one off track excursion can easily rip it off the car in that location.

+1

i found this out the hard way.

It does cool very well in the stock location though, the low pressure generated by the wheel/tyre pulls air through it.

If damage is an issue, it should be mounted between the intercooler and the radiator

I want it to be bulletproof. This location seems safer and it has been much easier to mount the larger setrab up there. While I understand that what everyone is saying about the size of the lines I was under the impression that while a larger line has greater flow capacity it can cause a pressure drop if the pump cannot keep up. Think about putting your finger over a hose to generate more pressure. Generating enough pressure in this application is obviously important as getting oil to bearings and other places keeps the engine healthy. Such was the issue on a Honda car I once worked on. Changing from a 10AN line to an 8AN line increased oil pressure to the effect that VTEC would engage where with it would not previously. If this is accepted practice obviously the pump is not a potential issue. Or perhaps my understanding of what happened on the Honda is skewed.

Thanks for the advice and opinions. Keep them coming. Here to learn.
