its obvious you havnt a clue which is right or wrong in the first place , Typical of this forum you tell someone how to do something the easiest way with the minimum amount of fuss and your a ***** .

Anyhow, I second this. Just move the CS and remove belt.

So why is there not a single write-up on this if that's the correct way to do it? I wanted to take the sprocket off to clean and degrease everything anyways since coolant got back there when I removed the water pump

I just did my timing belt and balance shaft belt without removing the crank bolt...what a pita that bolt can be. Anyways, I did it the scary way....put along breaker bar on it and and lay the bar flat on the garage floor and crank the motor over by blipping the starter...worked the first time!
I tried removing the bolt with a Snap On air tool and that couldn't take it off...homemade breaker bar by brute force/standing on it hanging from it.... didn't work....blipping the starter ONCE got it off no problem......
Otherwise just clean it up and leave it on and do it as the other member just suggested...move the crank sensor aside and pull it off and put it on that way...easy.

breaking the bolt with the starter was easy. Had I known to do that first I would have just done it before I took the car apart. I figured my impact would take it off but it just made a bunch of noise... Taking the bolt off is not a big deal and I don't see why people wouldn't take the extra 15seconds to pop the bolt off to make working in there easier and you can degrease the parts like the manual calls for

When I got the service manual for my '92 DSM there was one way of doing timing belts. Over time, on the DSM forums, various tricks and shortcuts appeared. When I got the service manual for my '03 Evo those tricks and shortcuts invented by owners were in there. So, it is apparent that Mitsubishi monitors the forums. And, I suggest, that over time new ways of doing things will continue to be invented.
I was doing belts on my DSM one day and looked around for a way of marking the belts and sprockets. I didn't have any chalk, I didn't have a grease pencil but on the shelf was a can of white house paint. So, white house paint it was and I posted this technique a number of times. The '03 service manual says to use white paint. I wonder...............
