Exclamation Engine Rebuild advice needed !

Hello friends,

I am rebuilding my Evo8 engine, the main aim is to acheive 500bhp , odd drag races nothing fancy just an ultimate reliable engine.
I am using the factory block 85mm Wiseco non hd pistons 8.5 : 1 comp [Wiseco K548M85 - Pistons and Rings for Mitsubishi 4G63 7 Bolt Standard 88mm Stroke, -17cc Dish, 85mm Bore] and Manely connecting rods [Manley 14020-4 H-Beam Connecting Rods - Mitsubishi 4G63 7 Bolt "Long Rod" 156mm] , ACL RACE bearings Mains and big ends.

-Manely rods have ARP2000 bolts 3/8 " -22. What is this -22 ?

-Using ACL race bearings for Mains, the main cap bolts used are Mitsubishi standard. What should be the torque given in ft/lb ?

- Long Rod" 156mm what effect it will have when used with standard crank and 8.5 compression Wiseco pistons ?

In my country people have little or no experience building turbo engines that is the reason why i intend to build it myself so i want to know what basic rules i need to follow putting together pistons, placing rings in ring lands, placing pistons pins, Rod bearings, tang positions, Main journal positions, how to give specified torque. Kindly share your knowledge and experience.

Pics will be uploaded later.
Thank you.

You're asking for a lot of info, and building an engine takes a good machinist, tools for measuring clearances, and attention to detail. bore gauges, micrometers, ring file, dial indicators are all tool necessary. It can be done without these tools , but wouldn't be done correctly.

The parts you picked are all good. Two points that I can think of:
To achieve 500hp you might require a relatively large turbo & that is better mated with 2.3L engine (100mm stroke).
What's the mileage on your car. You might want to examine cylinders wear level before deciding piston bore size. You might need oversized bore if cylinder wear level is significant.

Thanks for your reply

Well my car just has 30k kms on it, ill use a tomei M series turbo which will fit bolt on in place of stock turbo. I checked the cylinder wear its all fine. Going with standard stroke.

What changes will i see in the engine's behavior after the block is built? Oil pressure change? more growling sound ? Ill have to remap the car for sure.

You might get some piston slap especially when engine is cold, other than that all should be fine.
Are you using the M7960 turbo? It's a good turbo, kind of a slow spooler but would hit max boost relatively quick. It won't achieve 500bhb with a 2.0L & pump fuel.

Yep i am going to use M7960

440 bhp is also acceptable keeping the cars nature near to stock. Dont want to sacrifice the early punch. I am using ECU flash, i previously had evo8 turbo with 10.5t hotside of evo8mr.

Do you think that a major remap is due after this ? what knock values will i be seeing due to this piston slap ? To use ecu flash what other softwares do i have to install? my tuner ran away lol so ill have to work it out myself.

I am not changing my cams at the moment going with stock head, ill be using a single Bosch 355 lph fuel pump.

Yes, you need a remap & bigger injectors! You'd need ecuflash, evoscan is for data logging, also, you'd need a wideband kit for AFR logging. It's not going to be easy if you don't have a prior experience in ecu tuning.

One thing i learned about building my engine....next time I’m going to buy one that’s already assembled and machined. You won't be spending much more, unless you have a good machinist that will do the work for cheap.

My advice: Contact Buschur or M.A.P and buy a built short block. All the thinking is already done for you.

I appreciate your idea but friend i would have considered that option if i had 70 000km old motor with alot of wear and tear. I checked the tolerances and they matched with the service manual so why would i go the expensive way ?

No doubt buscher, M A P or JAM are really good at their work but for the time being i am not willing to pay that much just to get a street powerful car.

I already have 800cc injectors, one thing i missed is a software called HEX editor. Its used for decoding or something. I have some ones ROM image of ignition timing and the values are going in -ve after boost. e.g -5 , -7 , -10. What is this -ve does this -ve shows the degree retard BTDC ? but why its written in -ve ? thats a confusion.
