Oil filter question.. MD,MZ,K&N?
Ran out of few of the MD356000 filters I bought mid last year...
Dealers now tell me that I should be using MZ690116 filters...
Has anyone compare them?
How about K&N oil filters? Some said that they are physically
smaller than OEM's...
I did some searches on the board.. couldn't find any conclusion
on which to use...

Baldwin Filters 1-800-822-5394 (7a-5p CT M-F)
The Baldwin web site translates MD356000 to B227, but the hotline recommends B1402, if you have the space for the longer filter. (3 5/8" length). The 1402 has a higher burst pressure rating. The B227 has a 20 psi bypass, while the B1402 has a 14 psi bypass (for when the oil is really, really cold, or if the filter gets clogged).
If you can't find a local Baldwin vendor, the Hastings LF240 is the same as the B1402. (Hastings is a sister company to Baldwin.)
Mobil-1 and Walmart SuperTech (and, I've heard, K&N) are all made by Champion Labs: Filter hotline: 1-800-882-0890
The Walmart SuperTech (ST7317) uses a "clicker valve" bypass built into the end plate, and uses a cellulose (paper) filter with some synth strands. Champlabs says it's a 20 micron filter. When I was at Walmart, they had the 7317 priced at -- get this -- $1.95. (What the hotline calls "consumer friendly")
![Wink](https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
According to the hotline, the Mobil-1 (M1-108) still uses the traditional spring type bypass, and uses a much higher synth strand count, and is rated a 10 micron filter, intended specifically for synth oil.
I didn't ask about the K&N.
I have a Baldwin on my F-car (using Agip semi-synth oil), due to the need for a stand-pipe in a vertically mounted filter, but I'll probably go with the Mobil-1 filter on my EVO. (Presuming the price isn't too high.)
But I'm not about to pay over $20 for a Mo-1, when the $2 Walmart SuperTech isn't all that much less of a filter, and is just about as good as "the OEM filter". (Denso, I think.)
The consensus everywhere I've seen is to stay far, far away from Fram. Back in the '60s they were good filters, but these days, they're a disaster. Tons of reports of collapsing elements, clogs, non-functional anti-flowback valves, etc. The shop that tried to put a Fram on my 328 doesn't get to work on the car, anymore.

Been using both the Mobil M1-104 and the K&N HP-1004 for around 8000 miles and some road racing as well. Both have been holding up fine. Bought the K&N oil filter at Kragen for $9.99

Different filter manufacturers use different test procedures, so the "micron" ratings are more useful to compare filters by the same manufacturer than to compare across producers, unless you can find tests done by an independent tester, rather than by by the filter maker. Baldwin rates their filters 23 microns. ChampLabs may be using a flattering rating procedure. (Although I've seen other filters claim 1/10 micron.)
The M1-108 was $11.99 at AutoZone. The 7317 was $1.97 at Walmart, but is sized more like the M1-110 (which was also priced $11.99 at AZ).
The M1-108 looks like the pictures referenced in your link. The 110 and SuperTech are a bit longer, but the same diameter. (They were out of M1-104s)
I'll probably put the M1-108 on the car, but the SuperTech is cheap enough to have one to toss in the "kit" box in the trunk. (The "Justin Case".)

Some have posted that the Mobil M1-110 should not be used in our cars and the one that should be used is the 108. Some others have used the 110 with no problems and I don't see why it would be. The 110 is longer than the new Mitsu filter and the 110 is what goes on the 2g Eclipse 4g63s as well.
