Black gunk in head and exhaust manifold

My friends evo VIII suffered an engine failure this past weekend (boost pressure source from turbo to 3-port came off, overboost, rod through oil pan)

We started tearing down the motor last night and found this black crap in the the exhaust ports of the head and in the exhaust manifold, and we were wondering what it could be. It's very flaky and rubs off easily. Also, it leaves oily streaks when rubbed across the ground.

It's only at the very edge (about 1/2" to 3/4") of the exhaust ports. Same with the exhaust manifold, it's only about 3/4" in to the runners. Nothing made it to the turbo flange or into the turbo.

Here's some pics:

I'm guessing a low-quality E85.

He is currently running 93. Maybe from previous owner because he has had this car for a month only.

Soot is normal but that is extremely excessive.

Poor quality fuel, leaking intake/exhaust valve seals, or a rich tune can cause this. a faulty wideband can cause a rich tune as well. I had this problem with a fouled sensor.

The oily residue would indicate leaking seals. Without being there is see/smell it, its hard to say exactly.

It was running 93oct since my friend bought it. He wasn't the original owner, but the owner said it was 93oct, and the tune was definitely for 93oct.

The head will be coming off tonight so we can give it a closer look. It's supposedly a MAP Stage 1 head. The tune was a little on the rich side, but not TOO rich. Top end rpm's were 10.5 or so if I remember from looking at the gauge. It's a zeitronix sensor for the wideband.

Here's a little update on the motor...

Pulled the head and by some miracle it was not damaged at all. Not even a scratch or a nick. It's going to need to be sent out to be cleaned but that's it.

The block isn't salvageable though...about 4" long hole in the front of cyl #4, and a massive 7" round hole in the back. Look at piston #4 for lols
