2.4l build help with tolerance??!
Hey Guys, I recently built a 2.4l for my evo 8. Some quick specs are
bore size 87mm
4g64 block
4g64 crank
CP Pistons
Carillo rods
I took the motor over the a reputable machine shop in the Chicago land area that is very familiar with 4g63t motors and a bunch of other import motors. (supra's/boosted honda's/GTR..etc..) The point is I took it to a guy that I knew was familiar with building built/stroker motors. I had him check over the motor, new rings/bearings/honing it and anything else he said it needed.
I put the car together and it runs great. After approx 200 miles I go to pressure test the car and I have a lot of blow by at about 14psi. Air is pissing out the oil cap. I have not put my an-lines and catch to release crank case pressure yet.
I decided not to boost the car until I can verify that nothing is leaking, idles decent..yadaa yadhhaa yadhhaa.
Fast forward approx 400 miles later, the motor seems to consume some oil. Now I have not boosted the car at all..trying to verify that its the motor burning oil. I believe it is since I have put about a 1/4 of a quart of oil within the last 120 miles.
I called the machine shop up and just asked him if it was normal and he wasn't too sure since he had never ran into this issue before. I then asked him for the clearance for the piston to cylinder wall.
The clearance is 50 thousands... is that too much clearance?? Just wanted some opinions .
I might be a little paranoid about this but I just dumped a **** load of money in the car and want to be 100% sure.
This weekend I will be driving the car a lot more, both highway and city to verify its the motor.

^^ Correct meant to type "5 thousandths"
The first ten minutes I let it idle and make sure nothing was leaking then after it reached optimal temp's I rev'ed it up 5k-5500 .
For those who have built there motors is the clearance too big? I have read other built motors consuming oil but they are consuming 1/4 of a quart every oil change (3000miles). I wouldn't mind if that was the case.

5 thou is no biggie. It mostly depends on what piston is in the Motor. I had Ross pistons with 8 clearance and it was fine. My HD2 wiseco piston Motor recommended 4 thousandths. Also depending on the ring gaps that oil consumption is ok. BMW M Motors use up to a wrap every 1k miles factory.

When you say recommended clearance do you mean recommended by the manufacturer it self?
Update.. I drove the car a good 300miles ( I drive alot) and so far no oil consumption at all. I'm going to wait another 200-300 miles and check it again.

Alright you mentioned blow by issues, but forgot to mention about your PCV setup?
Do you have one? Are you running without one?
Car without a PCV (or clogged PCV) will consume oil and have oil busting out seams because you have to have some solution to relieve crankcase pressure reasonably.
Factory PCV uses vacuum at idle, and the inlet turbo suction at boost
