Aftermarket clutch enough or do i need to rebuild tranny?

Hey guys,

I am about to join the Evo family...coming from an STi i realize that the Evo's clutch and tranny might be considerably weaker so if my goal was to reach 400-450whp, daily driven and reliably so, would just getting an aftermarket clutch enough or would i need to rebuild my entire tranny? How much would it cost to rebuild a tranny to take that kind of power, torque, abuse?

thanks, Ghost

0 dollars and 0 cents. you will need a clutch but your tranny should be just fine with that kind of power. AMS, SHIV, AL, PRUVEN etc... are all making that power they don't have any problems with the tranny.

just as a side note John Shepherd from
www.shepracing.com

for those of you who dont know he drives the 8.76 second talon...

anyways he is rebuilding evo trannies now and in an email from him he stated that the evo tranny limits he has seen is around 550whp. I assume that this is safely with no problems...

just an fyi for everyone...

I think you can even run little more than 550.. it all depends what kind of abuse it is getting

Clutch first. When you get above stock levels the stock clutch will start to slip since it isn't made for too much power. Later on down the road with much more power you'll need your tranny strengthened up (I would highly recommend Shepherd as well). A way to make your tranny last longer though is change your tranny fluid every once in a while and flush your diffs. It can make a world of difference in the life of your trannies and diffs.

Abuse kills trannies. Misshifts and lots of hard launches will shorten the life of any transmission.

Drive it like a sane human and you won't have problems.

not entirely true I dont think all EVO owners are @$$h*le$, just me and a few others.(haha ya right).. but MANY have had problems with this tranny and clutch that drive absolutely sane... you may just get unlike from the start..

Doesn't a strong/grippy aftermarket clutch put more strain on the diffs? I thought one of the vendors (AMS?) shattered a diff on a launch? Why not stick with a stock clutch, but change it more often?

The reason most drivetrain parts will break is due to how much power you are putting down. A strong aftermarket clutch puts all the power you have down through the tranny and the diffs (since it doesn't slip but yet holds the power). A stock clutch with upped power levels will slip a lot and you will not get your power down let alone be replacing it very often. AMS probably shattered the diff due to power on a launch. Imagine no power through the diff, to all of a sudden 400+ ft/lbs torque hitting it, it easily has the ability to stress the diff enough to break.
