I searched google "ball bearing turbo failure" and I found a few examples of failed bearings in the oil pan that looked just like what I found. My conclusion is this car had an upgraded turbo and failure at some point. I'm thinking the next step is to check the head oil passages. The bottom end components all are in good condition and to spec.

The rockers are needle bearings so its not an exploded rocker. I'd imagine there is an oiling problem causing my noise most likely due to debris from this previous turbo failure.

the rockers use needle bearings not ball bearings...

my vote is turbo failure

I've never understood the whole ****ing someone over on a car like that. I would be replacing everything oil touches if I were you. Hope you have a good chunk of change in your Evo repair fund :-/

Your car is still running? So the bb didn't do anything damage? You are lucky my friend but it looks like its from a bb turbo.

took the head apart and oil pan off and inspected the cams and lower end completely. no bearing damage on the rods. cams look good and no abnormal wear on any of the journals or lobes. replaced all the lifters with GSC zero tick lifters. two rockers were really worn out where it meets the lifter most likely due to the cosworth m2 cams and i ordered a new set to replace them. found a small amount of debris in the strainer and replaced the strainer. the oil cooler was replaced and all of the lines blown out. didnt find any other conclusive damage

Yeah except for the oil pump... if debris got inside there you wouldn't know unless you removed the front case and inspected it...

I doubt that damaged anything. I currently have a blown up Garrett bearing in my oil pan. Not a big deal. When I change the oil I will fish it out with a magnet.

Well I want to do the timing belt and associated components. Is it possible to remove the front cover with the engine in the car?

so if there was a catastrophic turbo failure, does that mean that the compressor wheel made contact with the housing resulting in debris going thru the cylinders? hopefully, the intercooler acts like a strainer?

One would think the IC would trap the wheel debris ...at least for awhile.

for those with that kind of damage, cleaning the IC piping and flushing the IC seems prudent then.

I will be sure to check the I/C for any debris. So far removing the I/C piping I have found no evidence of debris of any kind.
