Mystery broken ball bearing found in oil pan

Hello,

I have been having a low rpm tick/slight knock and figured it was rod knock or lifter tick due to having cosworth m2 camshafts. I pulled the oil pan to check the rods and all of the rod bearings and cylinders are in excellent condition and are to spec, but i did find this in the oil pan:

any ideas what component this bearing goes to? i imagine the rest of it has been flushed out, and there were some small fragments of bearing race in the oil pump pickup as well.

any information or help on what needs to be changed would be extremely helpful.

thanks

Do you have a BB turbo?

Or should I say, did you?

I do not have an aftermarket turbo. stock evo 9 setup. The car runs fine with a weird ticking sound from the head/valve cover area. I just purchased the car and possibly it had an aftermarket ball bearing turbo on it at some point??

did you recently purchase your evo? perhaps someone blew their BB turbo, brought it back to stock turbo and sold it to you?

That's not very nice. If you still have the contact info from previous owner, I would question them in a calm manner of course, just find out the truth.

The only things inside the engine that have ball bearings are the rocker arms. Maybe that explains your engine noise.

that is a possiblity. I just cannot find or think of any place in the engine oiling system where there would be a ball bearing...

The bearings in the rockers are small. They are in a roller that runs against the cam. It is hard to tell what size your picture depicts.

DANG! i was thinking so hard for a component that had ball bearings AND had access to the oil system, turbo was the only thing that made sense! i completely forgot about rocker arms, what about the black pieces, they seem like part of a bearing raceway though. can we get a pic of the size of the bearins, like compared to a penny or something?

i will go take another picture. the ***** fit into the black components which are indeed the bearing race for those ball bearings.

I'm going to go with pieces parts from a BB turbo.... now you need to check everything to ensure there isn't more of that crap clogging up the feed or return lines as oil starvation would cause a nasty noise in the head.

It's threads like this that make me paranoid about buying a car that's ever been modified without paperwork.
